WASHINGTON — Eight senators who have spent weeks trying to write a bipartisan bill to overhaul immigration laws have privately agreed on the most contentious part of the draft — how to offer legal status to the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants.

Lost cause anyway. Some people want to lie to themselves. He does.

I think the only winning strategy that we have is to vote for the better candidate in the primaries, not just with a vote but with a check. We have to hold our noses and vote for Republicans that we don’t like because we cannot afford to shot off our foot by getting a Democrat elected. We are going through a tough tansition time now when we have few people that seem trustworthy. America is suddenly waking up but it will take some time before we get control of our own government.

1) Stay as informed as you can and don’t be too quick to judge a candidate as hero. We have been fooled before.

2) Support the best candidate in the primaries with a check and a vote as the primaries are the best chance of getting a candidate to your liking.

3) Send money to pacs that support your beliefs.

4) Even if a lousy Republican wins the primary don’t let the Democrats win. Hold your nose and vote for him or her.

5) Be careful about voting for third parties unless the Democrat has very little chance of winning. Follow the polling and if there is very little chance that the Democrat will win, then vote third party if you want to send a message.

6) If a lousy Republican wins keep it touch with him or her and let him/her know how you feel.

The Bush dynasty goes on, first HW Bush, then W, now Jeb and then Jeb’s half Latino son. When will it end? :{

First Norquist hijacked the word conservative and now he hijacks “tea-party.” If we thought up a new name for ourselves every week, Norquist would steal it from us every time.

Wow! Did you nail this one!

And sadly, millions of self-described "conservatives" will gladly pull the lever for Jeb Bush and Nacho Bush when the time comes and Karl Rove tells them to.

“We in Arizona are SOOO proud of McCain/Flake. How can they overlook the disastrous consequences to their constituents?”

Actually we could have had even more “disastrous consequences”...keep in mind that the AZ Dems were planning to run Gabby Giffords against Jeff Flake to take over Jon Kyl’s Senate seat. However, as you know, old Gabby ended up with a bullet in her brain bucket and the Dems realized that unlike Chicago, where the Amish reelected Jesse Jackson Jr. even while he was in rehab, AZ Dems here wouldn’t have much success in propping up Gabby enough to run.

Thanks. Disappointing. Rand Paul has also sold out. Is there anyone left?

It's a shame Tom Tancredo wasn't elected in Colorado. As far as I'm aware, there isn't anyone in the Senate who's trustworthy on immigration. Things are slightly better in the House, where candidates answer more closely to local constituencies (many of whom want something done about illegals).

What I am trying to explain to undecided and liberal low information voters on various websites is not my thesis. It’s Milton Friedmans’. Since my adopted grandpa is “dead” it’s up to me to copy and paste it in 2013....

You can not have BOTH open borders AND a generous collective welfare state with free benefits. Pick one.

Why do we have to pick either? We'd be much better off with NEITHER a welfare state nor open borders.

Rubio is finished in my eyes just for working on this with Schumer and Durbin.

How dare you! Don't you understand how many Freepers thought that Rubio was the cat's meow just a few months ago?

Many conservatives want their knight in shining armor so badly that they project all of their hopes and dreams onto a new "flavor of the month" savior every few months. Sarah Palin, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul etc. have all gotten their turn. Their fans would be livid livid if you point out early on that their emperors have no clothes, but eventually the sad reality sinks in.

You are absolutely correct. One of these days our knight will show up, but I have my doubts about the current crop of pretenders.

The trouble is, once people latch onto a political messiah, they become amazingly blind to his/her faults. They start to see what they wish for rather than what's before their eyes.

A perfect example of this was George W. Bush. All too many conservatives either ignored or made excuses for things Bush supported (amnesty for illegal aliens, the Patriot act, billions in aid to third world countries, no child left behind, TARP, etc) that they'd never tolerate from a Democrat or even from a Republican who didn't have the same faux conservative image.

I agree.

But use that question for liberals on other sites.
