~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska

Offutt Air Force Base (Offutt AFB) is a U.S. Air Force installation near Omaha in Sarpy County, Nebraska. It is the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command, the Air Force Weather Agency, and the 55th Wing. Its legacy includes the construction of the first two bombers to drop atomic bombs and nearly 30 years as the aerial command center for the U.S. in case of nuclear war during the Cold War.

Offutt’s diverse missions and global responsibilities put it on the cutting edge of the Air Force’s transformation. Each branch of the US military is represented among the approximately 12,000 military and federal employees assigned here. Offutt is a beautiful community situated near the Missouri River in the rolling hills of southeastern Nebraska.

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management and electronic-combat aircraft. It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

As a force provider, ACC organizes, trains, equips and maintains combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty and wartime air defense.

ACC numbered air forces provide the air component to U.S. Central and Southern Commands with Headquarters ACC serving as the air component to U.S. Northern and Joint Forces Commands. ACC also augments forces to U.S. European, Pacific and Strategic Commands.

Learn More About Offutt Air Force Base Here!

The Strategic Air and Space Museum is a museum focusing on United States Air Force military aircraft and nuclear missiles located near Ashland, Nebraska, along Interstate 80 south of Omaha, Nebraska. The objective of the museum is to preserve and display historic aircraft, missile, and space vehicles and provide educational resources. The museum is regarded as having one of the top collections of strategic aircraft.

The Strategic Air & Space Museum is regarded as the nation's foremost facility of its kind, the $29.5 million museum opened on May 16, 1998, and preserves aircraft and missiles for future generations. The Museum is a 300,000 square foot building that features a glass atrium, two aircraft display hangars, a traveling exhibit area, a children's interactive gallery, a 200-seat theater, a Museum store, an aircraft restoration gallery, and a snack bar. The glass atrium is a breathtaking structure constructed of 525 glass panels that encase the awesome Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

Riches Of The Soul

March 12, 2013

With the hope of winning a record jackpot of $640 million, Americans spent an estimated $1.5 billion on tickets in a multistate lottery in early 2012. The odds of winning were a staggering 1 in 176 million, but people stood in lines at grocery stores, gas stations, and cafes to buy a chance to become rich. Something inside us makes us think more money will solve our problems and improve our lives.

A man identified in the Bible as Agur had a different perspective on riches when he asked God to grant him two requests before he died.

First, he said, “Remove falsehood and lies far from me” (Prov. 30:8). Integrity is a key to living without anxiety. When we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. Deceit enslaves; honesty liberates. Second, he said, “Give me neither poverty nor riches—feed me with the food allotted to me” (v.8). Contentment springs from trusting God as our supplier and gratefully accepting what He provides. Agur said of the Creator that He “established all the ends of the earth. . . . He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (vv.4-5).

Integrity and contentment are riches of the soul that are available to all. Our Lord is pleased to give these treasures to everyone who asks.

Contentment does not come from wealth—
It’s not something you can buy;
Contentment comes to give you peace
When you depend on God’s supply. —Branon
Discontentment makes us poor while contentment makes us rich!

Read: Proverbs 30:1-9

Give me neither poverty nor riches—feed me with the food allotted to me. —Proverbs 30:8
Bible in a Year:
Deuteronomy 17-19; Mark 13:1-20

Time to visit with my FRiends for a couple hours. A friend at work is loaning me a lightweight wheelchair, so I will take my Mom this evening for a visit with my Dad. She can’t walk the distance to his room. I went this afternoon, but he didn’t respond.

Anyone reading this post now, I will be posting a bit later the status.

Some of you already know my Dad has been going downhill for months, but he had been getting around fine, and more fine when he remembered to use his walker. He was frying eggs every morning, but we had to watch him to make sure things got turned off, etc. He did set the microwave for more than an hour.

The only thing he has wanted to do for the last month is sleep. Last Saturday I was still able to help him down the stairs to take him for his Coumadin check, and he walked in and out with his walker...he number was quite high. That evening something changed and the fast downhill slide started. By midweek we noticed right side foot dragging, and almost overnight he could barely walk without help and by Thursday not at all. We thought it was just a speed up of the downhill ride and I started trying to find in home help. Saturday night after more than 2 hours of sitting by him, trying to keep him from trying to get out of bed and listening to “I have to get up”, I’m going outside”, “Leave me alone”, “Get your hands off me”. And lots more mostly unintelligible, we called 911. A Cat Scan revealed a subdural hematoma, with no clue how it happened.

Sunday we made the decision to activate his DNR as he is not going to get any better. He is unhooked from all machines and no more meds. We are waiting for a bed in the Palliative Care unit. This unit is “comfort without cure”....I had to look it up. After we made our decision both the nurse and the doctor said they would have made the same decision for their parent. We are completely at peace with our decision and praying only for a peaceful passing as he goes home. When he is alert, less and less often, he is angry that he cannot communicate...he talks a lot but not anything we can understand, embarrassed, and frustrated.

The nurse just called....they have a bed and he is being moved now. I will take my Mom, via wheelchair, in an hour or so and we will visit. Maybe he will respond to her holding his hand.

He will be 90 in May and on August 31st they will have been married 70 years.

Thanks, Everyone, for your prayers.
