Kansas Weeds Out Profane Vanity Plates
UPI ^ | March. 11, 2013

Kansas transportation officials said about 300 of the 61,000 applications for vanity plates are rejected each year.

The Kansas Department of Revenue's Division of Vehicles said its list of banned plates includes nearly 1,200 entries, including curse words, racial slurs, sexual references and slang terms, The Wichita Eagle reported Monday.

Donna Shelite, director of vehicles, said applicants will "go to all kinds of lengths" to attempt to circumvent the list, including using "ph" in the place of the letter "f" or using numbers in place of similarly shaped letters, such as a "5" to mean "s."

Shelite said officials sometimes need to search the Internet or consult with young people to decode the applications.

"There are some I don't understand," Shelite said.

Vanity plates, which can have as many as seven characters, cost $45 in addition to registration.

Heaven forbid anyone should have some fun with their license plats(s).

Hell, I don't want one anyway and don't understand why I have to have one.

Every state does this. It’s not news.

I’ve never understood why people pay the extra license fee (and in my state an up-front fee for the plate) when they could just paint the same sentiment on their fender or put it on a bumper sticker?

Of course I’ve also always wondered why so many worship at the Alter of the Eternally Offended ;-)

“Shelite” sounds like it wouldn’t pass muster as a tag name either.

I had to do the same thing in my phone company days when someone would request some odd combination of a phone number and I would try to figure out what it might spell. Particularly in a college town, that was a common request.

I remember the case in Colorado where a health food person wanted vanity plates that said “ILVTOFU” She claimed it said “I love tofu” but others read it differently and denied her request.

A big problem is profane wireless SSIDs, that popup when you try to search for wireless hotspots.
