Sheriff Wants to Reinstate Chain Gangs

Chain gangs - long a thing of the past in the Palmetto State - could make a resurgence in South Carolina if Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright gets his way.

Wright, an often vocal critic of the justice system, said Tuesday he's working with a state lawmaker to get a bill drafted that would reinstate the chain gang.

"I envision them not sitting around in the jails and getting fat on our dollar," Wright said Tuesday. "I envision them working six days a week, 12 hours a day and not being sentenced to 15 years at the taxpayers' expense."

Wright said he's working with S.C. Rep. Bill Chumley (R-Spartanburg) to research how much a statewide chain gang could save the taxpayers.

"If you really want to get the public's attention, tell them how much they'll save," Wright said.

The sheriff, who made national headlines after urging lawful women to carry concealed weapons, said chain gangs would do manual labor such as cutting highway grass, something the state spends millions on every year.

It'll pass through the legislature so long as "the tree huggers don't get in the way," Wright said.

Since there are still work crews, I suppose he means to have them all attached again -- for visual effect?

sounds good to me

ALL prisoners should be doing this. Are all our roads and ditches already clean?

A chain gang requires fewer guards. It’s more of a practical thing to do really. Especially when the economy is hurting and the state needs the labor. Since the state is housing, feeding, doctoring, and lawyering these criminals then they may as well do some work to ‘give back to the community’.

Perhaps they could even make it voluntary and give the inmates one day credit on their sentences for every day worked.

Inmates jump at the chance to get on a crew just to get out of the cage once in a while.

Well in large numbers it would certainly drive wages down a bit more in areas that have prisons.

a push broom and hand truck with a garbage can would be handy and a lot cheaper than a street sweeping machine.

Can't find the source, but there was a Sheriff who re-instituted chain gangs...
He would only let them out to work if the 'make-up' was a minimum of two whites for every three blacks.
If the numbers didnt add up, he kept them inside.
In a word, he was covering his arse 'politically'

We have work crews here in Idaho but it’s for alternative sentencing not for people convicted of major crimes.

“Well in large numbers it would certainly drive wages down a bit more in areas that have prisons.”

Not if they’re doing the kind of work that no one else was doing anyway.

Hopefully they will get all the hard boiled eggs they can eat.
A man needs lots of protein for that kind of work!

Joe Arpaio uses chain gangs in Maricopa County, AZ. They are strictly for trustees, not really as punishment.

We live about a 1/4 mile from a maximum security prison here in a village in Ontario, Canada. Up until about 10 years ago (when the prison closed) the prisoners were allowed out on supervised gangs doing all sorts of good things here. Seniors had their driveways shoveled when it snowed, the roads and sidewalks were kept spotless, and they helped with Spring cleanups, etc. The usual gang of do-gooders in the provincial government decided their rights were being violated, and stopped it. According to the local guards, the prisoners were mad when it ended. They went out of their way to be on “good behavior” to earn points to get on the work gangs. Another example of the government saving us from ourselves, this time it was convicts.

In many countries, particularly in South America, many large civil earthworks, including sea walls, bridge abutments, public buildings etc were constructed with convict labor. Fine in my book. Beats the weight room and tv.
