Not everyone gains a lot of weight from over-indulging in sugar, but a large proportion of the U.S. population is eating enough of it that it’s having devastating health effects — not only in terms of obesity but in metabolic problems that can lead to diabetes and heart disease in normal weight people. And, yes, we all pay for Medicare and Medicaid and higher overall insurance premiums in much the same way that nonsmokers end up paying in part for health care for smoking related diseases.
There’s an older, more accurate term for that kind of tax: sin tax. For some unkown reason people libs and various others aren’t bothered by it being “regressive,” though the lowly will shoulder the burden.
Your post is exactly why socialism wins. The gubmint institutes some new regime, or exerts greater control over what it already regulates. This causes problems. Instead of blaming the problems on socialism, we use them as an excuse for more socialism.
Well, I am certainly not a socialist and would personally flat out deny all health care to anyone that didn’t take care of themselves, but that obviously isn’t on anyone’s political agenda. And until there is a simple pill or prescription drug to treat obesity we are hammering out solutions in the realm of the realistic.

You need to come down from high orbit.
Nuts, trail mix and ice cream are excellent, healthy foods, and the foods most likely to cause health issues are bread, pasta and margarine. Add pharmaceuticals to that list and you conquer all the problems, tax the hell out of them.
Its not government’s business to stick their nose into health issues anyway.

Why is it that the leaders of these liberal enclaves realize that their people are too stupid to make reasonable food choices BUT feel they are smart enough to vote in elections?
That’s so funny.
Can’t say that I have tried that flavor but just might. Generally load up on ice cream when the grandson comes over but we just do vanilla with any kind of topping his little heart desires - he really prefers making ice cream sandwiches using two homemade cookies of different kinds for the top and bottom, then pour homemade fudge and caramel sauce over the top and eats it with a spoon. He runs track and has zero body fat.
Like most kids he is attracted by the name, tries a spoonful then decides he doesn’t like it so we had to compromise on some of his “freedom of choice”.
When I was pg with son, we lived two blocks from a Dairy Queen in Scottsdale, Arizona. Really poor so I used to scour the nearby ditches for 5 bottles to turn in at $.05 each so I would have $.25 and then could get my daily fix of a strawberry shake. Never could get that kid to eat strawberries though, in any form, even when he was little.
My best friend and I would also look for bottles and cans to turn in for candy money. Later, beer money. (Two broke college students making it on our own.)
We still laugh about getting through one week on five dollars between us when there was a hurricane headed straight for us. We thought if we made it through that, the rest of our lives would be a piece of cake.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds just like some of my daughter’s experiences. These kinds of life lessons though are what will help us survive the difficult times now.
A small amount is not a problem but excess sugar can alter metabolism, raise blood pressure, skew the signaling of hormones and damage the liver. It certainly poses enough health risks that it should be considered a controlled substance just like alcohol and tobacco. Otherwise, I agree with your general point. Either leave food alone or figure out a way to segregate the damage heavy users cause to society from the more responsible segments of the population.
Nothing should be a controlled substance. Those that wish to defile their bodies have issues with Yeshua, but certainly not with government.
Government needs to carry the mail, keep the roads paved, and the sewer running; the rest is none of their business.
