Jews worldwide see an ally in Pope Francis

WASHINGTON — Jews worldwide welcomed newly elected Pope Francis as a friend on Wednesday (March 13), and pointed in particular to his sympathetic and strong reaction to the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in his native Argentina — the deadliest bombing in the country’s history.

Benedict does not have a bad record with the Jews, Novak said, but he didn’t give it as much attention as Pope John Paul II, who called Jews the “elder brethren” of faith.

“I would like to see a kind of renewal of Jewish-Catholic relations which I think reached a high point during the pontificate of John Paul II,” said Novak, who has written extensively on the relationship between the two faiths.

Among other overtures to the Jews under John Paul, the Holy See recognized the State of Israel in 1997. He was the first pope to visit Auschwitz, to bless Israel, and to apologize for Christian acts against Jews.

“If the Catholics don’t canonize him,” Novak said, “the Jews should.”

Jewish groups also said Francis would pay close attention to social justice issues on which Jews and Catholics can work together.

“We look forward to our ongoing partnership with the Catholic church in combating poverty, a great legacy of the Pope during his tenure as Cardinal of Buenos Aires,” said Rabbi Steve Gutow, president of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, in a statement.

“In a world so awfully divided by wealth and opportunity, may his teaching and example help to heal our broken world and bring us closer to a time when no person goes to bed hungry.”

Why? Doesn’t the Pope think every Jew is going to Hell?

No. Where do you get the idea that the Pope thinks every Jew is going to hell?

Not hardly. Jesus was a Jew. His people were Jews. He returns to save the Jews from extermination by the armies of the world. He will rule the earth from Jerusalem for a thousand years. Christians will be reintroduced to the faith of and practices of much of ‘Judaism’ in the Bible. And, Jews will finally embrace Jesus. Convoluted, many think, but it’s all true.

Pardon my ignorance, but I was under the impression that one had to accept Jesus in order to get into Heaven.

If we fully understand what it means and God sees us that we understand then from that we have to respond. The Gospel message is a general statement for the individual to respond. But we being not outside of ourselves can not go saying that for sure that a person( jewish or otherwise) for sure will not find heaven. God's Divine will is mercy. If you ever watched Billy Graham or even the Pope you will never never hear them declare a real individual meaning say Mr ed jones went to hell. The message is a general message. We can not judge someone when we do not know for sure. Only God is the true judge of us all and only him.

I hope this helps you. Cheers.

I guess I was wrong. What about this?

John 3:3 ESV
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

You fully know for sure what that all means. Just like a physical child that does not fully undrestand. He or she is accountable like an adult? To be God is to know all things. We present the message God sees the truth of a person.

Whatever. Guess I'm not a theologian like yourself, but it seems pretty clear-cut to me.

Debbie Schlussel has a very different take, pointing out his outreach to Muslims and silence as the Peronists allied with Iran and Hezbollah.
