State Democrats rush a vote as GOP Senator steps away to nurse her baby

During a mid-afternoon session, as the Senate was debating a routine series of bills, Holmquist Newbry left the floor to care for her four-month-old son Makaio, who had been brought to the women's lounge off the Senate floor. Sen. Jim Honeyford, R-Sunnyside, moved to excuse Holmquist Newbry from voting. That meant the majority coalition had 24 votes, not 25, and they were tied at least temporarily with the Senate Democratic Caucus. Sen. David Frockt, D-Seattle, took advantage of the moment. He rose to demand an immediate vote on a bill sponsored by a Democrat that did not appear on the afternoon schedule.

The unusual motion quieted the chamber. Members rushed to their seats. Frockt demanded a roll-call vote. The assumption was that Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, a Democrat, would cast a tiebreaking vote to advance the bill to the floor.

Members of the Senate Democratic Caucus voted yes as their names were called. Members of the Majority Coalition Caucus voted no. And just in time, Holmquist Newbry emerged from the lounge to cast her vote. The motion failed 25-24.

Funny how the article does even mention what the bill was about?

Somehow I do not think it was a vote of making March 15th the official state day to wear a bow tie.

Gun control?

Raising taxes?

Contrast this hardline partisan action with a republican example. When Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd were both in the hospital, some vote was coming up in the senate. Old moderate coots John Warner and Ted Stevens ABSTAINED FROM VOTING so that the democrats could prevail because if Kennedy and Byrd were present, they would have.

I don’t blame the democrats for trying to take advantage of a situation to get their bill through. Our side could learn from their example.

The republican state senator one district over from me claims he would have been the only downstate republican senator to vote against Andrew cuomo’s draconian gun grab SAFE ACT. He was doing his national guard duty that week.

OK here is the deal. Either have the rules changed to accomidate your absences, IE: delegate a proxy voter or have the rules state they must wait a set amount of time for certain absences (breast feeding, bathroom run etc). But don’t ever expect the demonrats to give you slack.

OR

Resign and let someone else who can do the job, take over your duties.

Where did this happen? If this is the State of Washington, I will be embarrassed as I don’t recognize any of the names.

Lets not pretend the GOP doesn’t do similar things. In Virginia, the state senate pushed through a redistricting plan earlier this year, while a Dem state senator was at 0bama’s inauguration. People here cheered the move (and ripped apart the state house GOP for not going along with it subsequently). Politics is a dirty game, whoever is doing it.

“Lets not pretend the GOP doesn’t do similar things.”

I agree. And frankly, they should take whatever advantage they can. It’s been done before by both parties for both good and evil things. John Quincy Adams took advantage of a bare majority present to push through the repeal of the “gag rule” on slavery in the House.

My point was to contrast the nicey-nicey attitude of the moderate, go-along get-along types. “if we’re nice and conciiiatory to them, they’ll reciprocate” and it’s never the case. Politics is a dirty business, and should always be played to win.

I agree, and of course our GOP dropped the whole thing. But that was a bit different than rushing a vote because a female senator had to go away for 15 minutes.

In most cases though, a good politician with skills could easily delay such a vote long enough to take care of the problem.
