GOP's Rob Portman announces support for same-sex marriage

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman is greeted by his daughter Sally, left, and son Will after finishing the Paddlefest, an annual Cincinnati event, on Saturday, June 23, 2012.

Republican Senator Rob Portman has announced his support for same-sex marriage, saying he reversed his position on the divisive social issue after his son came out as gay.

“I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn't deny them the opportunity to get married,” Portman wrote in an op-ed published Friday in the Columbus Dispatch.

“That isn’t how I’ve always felt. As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples. Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way," Portman wrote in the op-ed.

The decision came after long consideration, the Ohio lawmaker told newspapers from his home state on Thursday. Portman’s 21-year-old son Will, who is a junior at Yale University, discussed his sexual orientation with Portman and his wife in 2011, the senator said.

His son said that his sexuality was “not a choice, it was who he is and that he had been that way since he could remember,” Portman told Cleveland.com during an interview in his Washington, D.C. office.

“It allowed me to think of this from a new perspective, and that’s of a dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have – to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,” Portman told reporters during that interview.

Feelings!

His homosexual son will never have a marriage like and man and woman, either physically or reproductively.

I'll wager Portman is his son's best friend, not his parent. He sure missed his chance to parent his son, by explaining that he will always love him, but that homosexual marriage is both a sin against God, and not good for society.

Mark Styne on someone’s show last night say

Before 1900 it [homosexuality] was an act, then up until the 60’s it was a sickness, now it’s an identity.

This is as disgusting as when VP Cheney did the same thing a few years ago. I notice with appreciation that the new Pope Francis has come out against gay marriage.

I am not going to vote for Portman’s re-election.

Pinkbell's comment nails it.

His belief in traditional marriage could never have been on solid ground if he changed just because his son came out. He tries to use the Bible to justify this, and the Bible makes it's teachings on same sex relationships clear. If he was following the Bible, he would love his son, but he wouldn't support his lifestyle and wouldn't want to redefine marriage. This does not go over with me as I voted for him believing he was conservative on social issues.

Perhaps Rob will feel comfortable now and come out of the closet dressed in his wife’s finest.

Denial. Pure denial. The fact is that his son will not have a relationship like real marriage even if he and another guy are allowed to get a license and go through a wedding ceremony. If the gay partners adopt children into this pretend-marriage, moreover, the children will be made to suffer through the pretense that two men who have sex with each other are really just like a man and a woman whose relationship results in offspring--and the lives of the children will be ruined as a result. Sorry, Senator, that is just how it is, no matter how much you or your boy want to pretend otherwise.

All I can add is that if he were my senator, he’d certainly never get another vote from me. The guy is a real piece of human garbage, if he ran misrepresenting his values, and now safely after his election reveals he’s supporting this deviancy. Not that it’s an unusual situation when it comes to RINO’s. That’s part of their common characteristics... dishonesty and backstabbing.

portman used religion to hide from logic and reason.

as long as portman bs’d with mere religion, he never had to address the logic and reason homosexual conduct is just plain wrong. He never address how real science does NOT support the born myth.

only the courts believe they can rule on the laws of science.

“I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn't deny them the opportunity to get married,”

Why limit it to "two people" Rob - why not three or four? How can you object to polygamy if a group is "prepared to make a lifetime committment to love and care for each other"? And why just adults? Why not include children if they are prepared to make such a commitment? And if same sex marriage is allowed they who shouldn't gay siblings be allowed? IF we are getting rid of any standards they everything is fair game on terms you just established.

The fight is not even begun. I’ve been hearing forever that the gay issue and pro life are the differentiator between winning and losing when it is has never been the case. Even though we had some set backs in blue states in 2012 the remarkable thing is the pro marriage side performed far better in those states than did our Republican Presidential candidate. The problem we face is a conspiracy of silence. We don’t have a conservative media that will provide a true avenue to get out the truth. The biggest mistake is addressing this issue primarily from a religious perspective. One doesn’t have to be religious to understand that homosexuality is NOT a positive lifestyle nor is it equivalent to biologically correct sexuality. Also there are clear indicators that childhood sexual abuse is a factor in those who choose non hetersexual unions. Also there is a predatory component to homosexuality I’ve witnessed it myself. I have had more than one lesbian aquaintence who has activity scouted to find heterosexual women to “convert”. This practice appears widely accepted in the gay community. The biggest challenge is the conspiracy of silence and the conflation of personal homosexual acquaintence and friendship with the goals of gay activism. One can have compassion for a person without endorsing their sexual behavior but for the gay activist not endorsing the gay is hating the person. The whole idea that there is no choice to how one acts to sexual desires is a highly rupugnant and dangerous idea and it has been fed by the norming of pornography and obscene behaviors. The biggest challenge is that most people just don’t want to deal with this issue and desire it to go away.

Why we allow our government to have any say about marriage, how to tax it, who can do it is beyond my understanding.

It is a religious institution and should not even be a political arguement

So because his son's a faggot we're all supposed to abandon our culture and God's law and accept this abomination? Rob Portman is an arrogant, selfish pr*ck.

Now you can’t watch a tv show anymore without at least one character being a fag. You’d think half the population were pillow biters.

And did you notice how Obammie the Commie’s first public comment about the new Pope was in essence, “He’s a good little socialist because he supports the poor, and we like that because my administration use the poor to push communism/socialism.”

As soon as it came out that the new Pope would support the traditional doctrine, the headlines started portraying him as a shrewd politician, behind the times, and as a participant in ‘dirty wars,’ etc.

The radical individuals, as Bork defined them, those whose self-centered focus becomes a depravity will destroy this nation from within.
