I went on a trip to Cancun several years ago, and also took a bus tour to Xcaret, about an hour and a half away.
About halfway there our bus stopped and we saw a line on soldiers all with automatic rifles standing alongside the rode, freaked my wife out something fierce.

That was going on in Acupulco and Puerto Vallarta in the mid eighties. I took my daughter after she graduated...it was a great civics lesson for her. I wonder how long before we see the same on our streets.
About 20 years ago my husband and I were stopped on the highway between Piedros Negros and Nuevo Laredo by the Mexican army. We prayed that it really was the Mexican army, they pointed their AH47s at us while they searched our trucks. Fortunately they didn’t find anything and they let us go but I was scared nearly to death.
