Colo Legislature OKs expansion of firearms checks

DENVER (AP) — A landmark expansion of background checks on firearm purchases was approved Friday by lawmakers in Colorado, a politically moderate state that was the site of last year's mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater.

The bill previously passed the state Senate and now heads to Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, who is expected to sign it into law within two weeks.

Earlier this week, Colorado lawmakers approved a 15-round limit on ammunition magazines. It is also awaiting the expected approval of the governor.

The bill passed Friday expands cases when a $10 criminal background check would be required to legally transfer a gun. Republicans have opposed the bill,

"We know for a fact that whatever law we pass criminals won't care," said Republican Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg.

The vice president praised passage of the bill.

"Congrats to Colorado House and Senate for passing universal background checks," read a tweet sent by the office of Vice President Joe Biden from his official (at)VP account.

It was followed by another tweet referring to the theater shooting that read, "The families of Aurora deserved a vote and got one. Now U.S. Congress must act too."

Congress is also considering a number of new firearm restrictions.

Colorado is the first state outside the East Coast to significantly ratchet back gun rights after the theater and school shootings. Colorado's gun debate was being watched closely because it's considered a swing state with both a gun-loving frontier past and an unfortunate history of mass shootings, including the 1999 Columbine High School attack.

"Are going to stop all criminals from getting guns? No," said Democratic Rep. Beth McCann, a sponsor of the background checks bill. "But are we are going to put a barrier there, make it more difficult for them? Yes."

Colorado has still not come to grips with their real problem ~ they allow nut cases to roam at will.

The Aurora theater was the only one near the shooter’s residence that banned guns. Sandy Hook also banned guns. No progress on gun-free zones, even as all firearms become registered as a result of this law. Because it isn’t about safety, it’s about disarming the general public.

What a liberal sh** hole Colorado has become. Grew up there but won’t go back.

I have declared myself a sovereign individual. I am now under no obligation to follow laws made that abridge my rights.

It behooves us Texans to stay ever vigilant, though.

Californians are moving here in droves, and are changing the landscape a bit.

We need to close our borders—LOL!

I’m waiting to see all of the legal challenges and their impact on “enforcement”.

I expect the only LEO enforcement would come from Denver, Aurora, & Boulder.

Other Police, Sheriffs, and State aren’t too enthusiastic. True of most D.A.’s too.

Then there will be ballot initiatives to overturn these.
That will be great incentive for 2014 elections and firing most of these anti-Constitutional weenies.

Lived there when Gov Lamm and Romer were twisting the knife into taxpayers. When the Crapifornians started moving in I finally bailed and moved back to Texas. Not going back until the fruits and nuts have all withered from inhaling their own smoke.

People in CO are as nutty as the Rocky Mountains are rocky. But in WY, they still have common sense. Explain?

Sheriff Maketa releases statement regarding gun control stance

Historically, any citizen would be allowed to speak if they arrived at the Capitol early and signed up on testimony records. Although sign up sheets were in place and citizens including myself signed up, we were completely disregarded. Minutes after I signed up to testify, I learned a different process would be utilized and testimony was based on three categories: experts, preferred witnesses, and public witnesses. No explanation was provided to define expert or preferred witness. I was told this decision was made by the senate president and the chairperson of the hearing committee. Additionally, experts would have no time constraints and all others would be restricted to three minutes.

As I made my way out of the Capitol, I was shocked at the number of people who attended these hearings. It's estimated the number of people in attendance reached 1,000. I spoke to several and was told they just wanted their voice to be heard.

I am not sharing this because of the outcome of the hearings that day; rather I am sharing this because of the process implemented and the faces of all those citizens that were never permitted to participate in the process. Government is supposed to be by the people, for the people and on this day, they were crushed and kicked to the side. Special interest coalitions and hand picked experts with no relevant expertise trumped our citizens.

I heard that one of the firearms component manufacturers (Magpul industries?) was planning on leaving Colorado if this law passed.

I know a long ago friend moved to Col...definately her and her husband leftists....he was one of those guys that didn't get drafted back in the Nam era, allowed to keep going to college, and then worked for the fed. govt for big bucks and pension....so naturally, they want to protect their easy way of life...

while other guys his age went into the service, either by choice or draft, guys like him got in front of the gravy train....it makes me sick that now they all are leftists.
