Chicago Public Schools to Start Sex Education in Kindergarten
The New American ^ | 3/14/2013 | Dave Bohon

Posted on 03/16/2013 5:17:16 AM PDT by IbJensen

A new policy approved by the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will require all public school students to participate in sex education instruction, beginning in kindergarten. According to the CPS website, the new mandate, passed on February 27, will require each student to receive “minimum instructional minutes” of sex-ed information that is “medically accurate” as well as (supposedly) age-appropriate.

“It is important that we provide students of all ages with accurate and appropriate information so they can make healthy choices in regards to their social interactions, behaviors, and relationships,” Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in the CPS announcement about the policy. “By implementing a new sexual health education policy, we will be helping them to build a foundation of knowledge that can guide them not just in the pre-adolescent and adolescent years, but throughout their lives.”

In its announcement, the CPS explained that in the earliest grades students “will focus on the family, feelings, and appropriate and inappropriate touching, while students in fourth grade will learn about puberty, including the physical, social, and emotional changes that accompany it, and the causes and transmission of HIV infection.”

After that, instruction gets more intimate, said the announcement, with content in grades five through twelve including “information appropriate for each grade level on human reproduction, transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), healthy decision-making, sexual orientation and bullying, and contraception, including abstinence.”

The announcement emphasized that “as is the case under the current CPS policy, parents and guardians are able to opt out of having their children participate in the sexual health education instruction.”

The CPS noted that the plan was developed by the Chicago Public School Office of Student Health and Wellness, with help from a consortium of community action groups, including Mikva Challenge, the Chicago Department of Public Health, the University of Illinois-Chicago, the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health — and, not surprisingly, Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Stephanie Whyte, the CPS chief health officer, told the Chicago Tribune that the new sex-ed policy was prompted by statistics supposedly showing that a majority of the district's students are sexually active. “Fifty-two percent of our students have had sexual intercourse,” Whyte said, pointing to the school research. In addition, the CPS announcement said the new policy is designed to align with the Obama Administration's 2010 national HIV/AIDS strategy.

Not surprisingly, the announcement was met with stern opposition from conservative, Christian, and pro-family leaders, who especially criticized the policy's intrusion into younger grades. “They're very much pushing an extreme agenda across the board, both to normalize sex and begin the conversation earlier,” Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, told Baptist Press News.

Huber challenged the idea of an “age appropriate” measure for sex education that would take the curriculum into kindergarten and lower primary grades. “The groups who are promoting those standards would essentially define age appropriate as anything that can be cognitively understood even though it's not developmentally appropriate,” she said. “So really there are no limits to what you can share as long as you make the vocabulary elementary enough.”

Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council told the Christian Post that the notion of early-childhood sex education “is part of the legacy of Alfred Kinsey, and the belief that 'children are sexual from birth.' This is a false and pernicious idea that introduces words, thoughts, and concepts to children long before it is developmentally appropriate for them. This premature exposure may contribute to early sexual activity, when we should be working to prevent it.”

Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute, the state's leading pro-family group, told The New American that in addition to promoting and encouraging sexual activity at an earlier age, the re-vamped CPS sex-ed policy will doubtless indoctrinate children into embracing homosexuality as a normal lifestyle. Higgins pointed out that “comprehensive sex ed dogmatists believe it’s appropriate for kindergartners to learn about families that are headed by homosexuals, whereas many parents believe that no child in early elementary school should hear anything about homosexuality. What’s worse, comprehensive sex ed proponents will present these disordered family structures positively.”

Higgins said that “it is not the obligation of public schools to teach about every sexuality-related phenomenon that exists, and it is neither the obligation nor the right of public schools to affirm phenomena, like homosexual relationships, that many believe are immoral.”

If comprehensive sex-ed proponents have their way, the type of curriculum CPS is foisting on its students may well become the norm nationwide. In January 2012 a group calling itself the “Future of Sex Education” unveiled its k-12 “National Sexuality Education Standards” that Higgins warns is nothing less than a plan to “usurp local control and impose liberal assumptions about sexuality on our nation’s children.”

Predictably, the groups involved in designing the standards include the radical Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the equally radical Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), the abortion giant Planned Parenthood, and the National Education Association.

Higgins said that under such a streamlined, nationalized sex-ed curriculum, “it is likely that, starting in kindergarten, not only will children will be introduced to disordered family structures, but they will also be introduced to the idea that 'gender' is constructed by society. This paves the way for teaching kids positively about gender confusion (and cross-dressing), which will likely take place in grades 3-5.”

Schools in Massachusetts are already well on their way to embracing the spirit of such a curriculum. As reported by The New American, in February the Massachusetts Department of Education “issued a directive for how schools should deal with 'transgender' students, including the rule that students who claim that they identify with the opposite gender must be allowed to use the opposite-sex restrooms and locker facilities.”

Higgins told The New American that her advice to the parents of kids in the Chicago schools is to make plans now to opt their children out of the city's dangerous new sex-ed curriculum, which is slated to be adopted in 2015. “Teach your kids at home,” she advised.

She predicted that teachers slated to instruct in these classes “will not be experts in child development, psychology, ethics, morality, theology, and biology — all of which subjects are critical to education on sexual health. And they will have been inculcated with non-factual progressive beliefs about sexuality, beliefs which are awash in ignorance.”

"....so they can make healthy choices in regards to their social interactions, behaviors, and relationships,” Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett...

Another hyphenated socialist idiot!

America's insane governments , local or the central socialist government , will ultimately destroy the minds of childfren and remove their 'period of life that should remain innocent'. What they are doing in the name of education is stringing a giant millstone around their necks!

Age 10 or 11 parents, not 'pubic education' must inform children of the tools of life they possess and their function. Government: stay away from that short part of early life that is pure imagination and innocence. How sick does someone have to be to want to destroy it?

Parents had better stand up and begin to act like adults or, thanks to their obsession with other pursuits rather than raising their children, an entire generation may end up in the sexual gutter.

All parents homeschool their children until they turn them over to to professionals like the ones who devised this policy, professionals who as a group vote to support socialist government policies.

Parents should seriously consider homeschooling as long as they can. The main goal of my own homeschooling was to give my daughter the moral and character foundation so that she would know how to make wise and godly choices in her life.

It is no accident that socialists flock to childhood education. Some, like Bill Ayers, take pleasure in the government systems that invite them to indoctrinate children, and not to God’s values, or liberty, but to the socialist collective.

The “public school”, including the “charter school”, is BY FAR, the largest, most expensive, most subversive, and most destructive entitlement program in the country.

The “public school” is better understood as the “government school collective”.

It is silly to imagine that you can fix the public schools, because the very concept itself is collectivist.

Any child that comes out of the government school collective with their moral compass and common sense intact does so in spite of the government school indoctrination, not because of it.

It is hypocritical for you to submit your children to an authority with whom you fundamentally disagree. Children instinctively mistrust hypocrites.

If you want to win the culture war, have lots of children (see my tagline) and homeschool them or form your own school cooperative with your church or synagogue and like-minded friends and relatives.

Nobody loves our children more than you do.

Nobody can teach your children better than you can.

Nobody knows your children better than you do.

Your children would love nothing better than to be taught by you, if you start doing so before they are corrupted by the government school collective.

If you have children, make whatever sacrifices you must to get them out of the public schools.

DO NOT FEED THE BEAST!

Especially not with your own children.

And DO NOT TAKE GOVERNMENT “EDUCATION” MONEY!

He that pays the piper calls the tune, and that’s especially true for any government entitlement program.

The Rationalization of a typical parent, even here:

My WONDERFUL public school doesn’t do ANYTHING like that. Why, of course not. They would NEVER do that to the precious children in our neighborhood. Why, we know the teachers, and they just love children - would never let those ‘evil’ people have access. In fact, two of the teachers even go to my church. They are just like us and will fight for our children.

And the Real reason:

Life is VERY EXPENSIVE these days, and even more so when I have to buy the best furniture to keep up with the Jones’s, and the expensive cars, and expensive plasmas - and that boat, Ohh!! that boat - I REALLY need that boat and I’m half way to saving up for it. Thank goodness my kids have a “free option” when it comes to school - we have a great deal - I put them on the big yellow bus in the morning, and the big yellow bus brings them back to me in the afternoon - in between, I don’t really care what happens, as long as they come back in one piece. And in any case, I’m no idiot, I PAY PROPERTY TAXES and I’m going to get my money’s worth by making those schools educate my kids.

If they teach sex ed the way they teach the things that they are supposed to be teaching, such as reading, writing and mathematics, half of them will be unsure on the difference between a male and a female.

How many parents will withdraw their children?

None.

Why?

Free babysitting.

That is my government school catechism.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of Jesus' words regarding child abuse and millstones, however.

This is what happens in the rush to have an equal outcome society. Because we have allowed portions of society to exist outside the norms of moral behavior, we have to bring everyone down to the level of the lowest apes within it by averaging down. The mantra has been if we keep everything equal, we will raise the level of everyone...that never happens. What does happen is we bring down the best to a lower level. Education is one aspect but it can be seen in other areas too but unfortunately in the education arena it is most prevelent and corrosive.

Reason number 416 to home school your kids.

If you’re a FReeper with kids, you should be home schooling them. Or, if that won’t work, enroll them in a good Christian school.

You need to hurry. nobama wants your kids from birth through college and beyond. He’s bound and determined. Are you?

More INSANITY!.

I guess it is an important phase in one’s life - especially a 5 or 6 year old - to learn the proper way to prepare a cucumber for ‘safe sex’.

By the time they are 8 or 9 they will be peeling bananas without using their hands.

Of course in the 200 question pop ‘multiple choice’, if 2 or more questions are answered “I don’t know” they will have pinpointed another ‘recruit’ and be able to get federal funding PLUS when another kid in the playground ‘pushes’ said kid, ‘they’ can charge him with a hate crime so as to ruin his life forever, for being an 8 year old.....

I would imagine that when I started school in 1944 and went in Navy in 1956 there were a bunch of ‘old fartz’ sitting around the cracker barrel lamenting ‘how soft’ this new generation is becoming and how disgusting the teachers etc were.

THEY just couldn’t reach millions with the ‘stroke’ of a key like ‘we’ can.

You and I are of the same generation. I too entered military service in 1956 when Dwight Eisenhower was our CIC.

The 50’s had it’s problems, but during that decade the ‘going was good.’

Public schools come straight out of the Communist Manifesto; indeed, it is the tenth plank.
Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, et cetera, et cetera.
Remember, this is out of the same entity that proclaims “abolition of the family”. The family is the basic unit of all societies; wipe out the family and you will be left with anarchy and squalor.

Thank you. Aptly describes the problem. I would remind people, additionally, that they are accepting welfare when they send their kids to public school. The argument of property taxes doesn't prevail.

“Thank you. Aptly describes the problem. I would remind people, additionally, that they are accepting welfare when they send their kids to public school. The argument of property taxes doesn’t prevail.”

You’re welcome. But having said that in my nasty tone (to get the point across), it really can be a major lifestyle hit for conservatives, who tend not to be as wealthy as white Democrats (in general) and also (thankfully) have larger families. For a lot of these people, it may mean living in a crappier area, or maybe even an apartment or cheap condo, just to get the commuting time down (so to have time to home school and keep car costs down) and the cost of housing down.

It’s not easy for these people...but they only have one shot (typically) to raise kids, and the kids will appreciate a relatively meager lifestyle with dad and mom around for them, possibly educating them, MUCH, MUCH MORE than they will ever car about the type of furniture in the living room, or a few rides in the boat.

One last thing to keep in mind. Although the Jones’s may not be impressed that you live in a marginal neighborhood, keep in mind that if you don’t send your kids to public schools it really doesn’t matter too much (unless the place is a real dump). You will control the friends your kid has and they will be better kids than even the kids in the best public schools - that is a given.
