Soon, soon, they should be able to buy the entire Carnival cruise ship inventory for a song...
What could possibly go wrong?
I could see this as the place to go to get away from government nanny states.
Who do they pay taxes to?
I can see this being attractive to the overtaxed citizens of California, too.
Capitalism at it’s best! Instead of the government controlling skilled immigrants, let free market capitalism operate freely.
can you buy an oversized soda on board?
Oh golly-gosh-wow! Cant wait to invest in this, sure it will be a huge money-maker! /s
There is good money in proposing mega-projects unlikely to come about. Not in making them happen (unless from some fluke they do), just in proposing them.
Project Venus and going Galt are now underway...where do I get aboard?
I think the idea of buying Belle Isle and making it a tax free territory was a more feasible idea that would produce tax revenue by virtue of having offices onshore in both Canada and the USA.
Folks, if you think this is good, you’ve not thought the whole thing through (putting it kindly).
Ownership is the key to control.
Going on the ship as an employee or a contractor does not make you a small business entrepreneur, making your own software and selling it. Going on that ship simply makes you cheap labor.
Owning the ship, or hiring the contractors (cheaply) makes you the owner of an enterprise that is neatly evading the US legal framework by sitting 12 miles offshore.
I am amazed at how so many Americans are getting ripped by big business and don’t know it - or won’t admit it.
The tax code, written by big business for big business, makes the small business pay huge taxes and lets big business skate free. Just as important is the risk quagmire of employment law and regulation; it takes a far smaller percent of revenue to deal with it for big business than it does small business.
RE Belle Isle. You want to STEAL this jewel from the people of Detroit! Are you a racist?
I suspect that one of the main motivations for a company is to have their employees “always on the job”. It really isn’t much different from large corporate campuses all over the world - except with a shorter commute to the desk.
The guy proposing it even planned on having it open to the public during the day so they could visit the restored amusement park and zoo.
Here’s my prediction. Within twelve months after it’s proven a success...another six ships are planned. Someone puts one off the coast of New York City by twenty miles. Another one gets anchored off the coast of Miami, with Cuban employees performing various medical procedures for a quarter of what it cost in the states.
The US won’t be able to control them or tax them.
No offense, but nonsense. The United States is no longer in the business of following laws or even it's own Constitution.
