Obama phone advocates fight back, but call drops (rife with fraud?)

After the Federal Communication Commission reported this week that 41 percent of those receiving free mobile phones don’t meet the requirements — some because they’re dead — the proponents of the so-called “Obama phone” program are firing back. But they still miss the point.

Ever since GOP Rep. Tim Griffin of Arkansas announced early this week that Lifeline, a free phone service for low-income families that costs taxpayers $2 billion a year, was rife with fraud, conservative lawmakers and pundits alike have jumped on the bandwagon to bash it.

The program’s supporters are now fighting back.

“Allow me to set the record straight,” said Mignon Clyburn, a Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission according to The Hill. “Without this program, 15 million low-income families would literally be choosing between feeding their children or going without a dial tone that potentially could save their lives and put them on a better economic path.”

We all make economic choices.

Perhaps some could choose between buying pot and buying a phone.

Perhaps some could choose between buying a 52 inch TV and buying a phone.

Perhaps some could choose between buying $500 tennis shoes and buying a phone.

Perhaps some could choose between having another illegitimate child and buying a phone.

I am sure that there are out there some people that literally can not afford a phone but I doubt that there are 15 million that could in no way pay for there own phone.

ROFLMAO!

This idjit acts as if the $11 per month per phone is a make-it-or-break-it proposition for these people!

Does he NOT look at the pictures where they decorate themselves with expensive items such as tattoos, 'grilles' and false fingernails?

Oh.....I forgot-

they're Democrat, so common sense need not apply.

Whenever you hear, read “Allow me to set the record straight” or “Let me be clear” it is the obsufucation of the truth - in plain English it is a lead into another lie.

Time and economics have raced ahead leaving the Democrat largess peddlers in the dirt. You can buy serviceable cellphones for $5.00 AND buy call cards for $100 good for a year of service. If you don’t make any calls, and just keep them charged, your security is assured.

Meant to say, “WITH this program, 15 million low-income families are literally choosing TO SIT ON THEIR BUTT INSTEAD OF BEING RESPONSIBLE AND GETTING A JOB ON THEIR OWN WHILE NOT feeding their children FOR USING THE EXCUSE THAT going without a dial tone CAN potentially save their lives and put them on a better economic path.”

EXCUSE TO STAY LAZY!

IF dead doesn't prevent them from voting, why should it prevent them from having an OmabaPhone?

Grammar isn't all that hard. The phrase would properly be "choosing between feeding their children and having a dial tone". The author was really saying that if they fed their children, they would go without a dial tone.

More seriously, they already have a free landline program, and most poor people live in the inner city where landlines are easy and cheap. SO they'd only be choosing convenience.

And most poor people don't feed their kids. They get free breakfast and lunch at school, and food stamps for dinner.

And my cell phone costs me $7.33 a month. It would be fifty cents cheaper if not for federal taxes. $20 every three months, if I limit my use to 73 minutes or less a month. No kid is starving because of $8 a month. I bet these people have TV sets that use almost that much in power a month. Which maybe they aren't paying for either.

And the funniest thing is a democrat would probably be happy that the government manages to only waste half the money -- for government, that is probably better than usual.

Horse manure!!!!!

But if the socialists insist on giving free phones away, make sure that the phones can only dial 911..............

Elections are superfluous, as James Clyburn's daughter is entitled to that spot.

What the proponents are really arguing for is cell phone provider / carrier’s best interests not the recipients.

Here is an interesting fact. All cellphones will successfully dial 911 even if not registered to any carrier. It’s requried by law for the carrier to put those calls through. An old used cell phone is all these people truly.

Exactly. Phone contracts, defense contracts, carbon credits.......none of these are for anything other than enriching the Washington insiders and their political cronies.

What happens with the free phones is the service time gets used up and now that's all those phones can call UNLESS the user buys a new card, or signs a contract for service.

This is just a subsidized cell phone serice advertisement ploy for the cell service providers.

I can get better at Wal-Mart for less.
