I was going to say, like you, send Obama voters, Democrats, communists, etc. One way to rid Earth of its mental defectivies, but then the planner wanted people who were “utterly dependable, good in groups, and at their best when things were at their worst.”

That leaves out most Democrats and liberals, all marxists and communists, a good part of academia, much of the existing mainstream media (war correspondents from Iraq and Afghanistan excepted), and assorted extremists.

When was the last time that you can think of where liberals/Democrats were “utterly dependable” other than being “utterly depending” on the Govt for free goods and services (cheese, cellphones, rent, mortgage refinancing, 16 ounce sodas, etc).

They’d starve in a week. Why waste good MRE’s on them?

“Good in groups”? Yet, if you like one totalitarian leader and his sheeple, aided by a few soul-less lackies.

“Best when things are worst”. Oh gee, let’s see - Sequestration, unemployment between 7.7 and 9.0+ %, with underemployment at about 16%, not seeking employment about 7-9%, black kids selling drugs to survive instead of being in school to learn in order to get a job, taxes on businesses stifling them from expansion, thus making the job pool smaller for many up-coming youth, driving businesses out of the country because of taxes, a marxist “tax the evil rich” policy, one healthcare policy or you get fined or go to jail, etc.

Oh, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, No. Korea, Red China, Russia, Hugo “I’m still dead” Chavez and his communist support activities for other reds in Latin America (Uruguay, Argentina, Boliva, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and a bloody drug war in Mexico.

Also “Fast and Furious”, “What difference does it make?”, “Just a bump in the road” (4 dead Americans), Black Panther Party intimidation of voters, black crime out of control esp. against other blacks, illiteracy on the rise, teenage pregnancy on the rise, drug use on the rise, violent crime in general on the rise, etc.

On second thought, Mars is called “The Red Planet”. Yeah, let’s send the leftist bastards up there by the millions, then, to quote from one of my favorite movies, “Alien”, “Let’s go into orbit and nuke the place”.

Yes! We have winner. Build them rockets now and make them large. Got to lighten Earth’s heavy load. Just doing God’s work since we don’t have the Black Plague anymore, just a Red plague.

I’m feeling really magnanimous tonight. Free rides for all lefties and free peanuts as well.

Bon Voyage. You can “Serve Mankind” by your leaving.

Didn't mention anything about dying.

#39 re ability to leave Mars. Haven’t you seen the Movies “Mission to Mars” (I think it had Michael Madsen and Val Kilmer and Cary Ann Moss, and another like it with Don Cheadle who does leave Mars by other means?

Seriously, due to Mars lighter gravity, space ships could be assembled from parts shipments on the planet, fuel added, and Voila, you’re homeward bound, not that we would want any Martian Marxists coming back to wreck earth a second time.

There is a huge, yawning gulf between the physical possible and available technology.

Regardless, Hollywood notwithstanding, the economic hurdles are enormous.

With the transmission delay, it'll be just like it was with JimRob's old server. You'll hardly notice the difference.

Yes, Vint Cerf, one of the real founders of the Internet helped the JPL design IP Addresses for the Solar System as part of the Interplanetary Internet. Some Internet protocols have been in use since the late 1990's.

I think your “volunteer” is from the school of thought that says if we put too many people on mars, it might tip over and fall out of orbit.

Like Guam.

But bigger.

I saw a movie once about WWII prisoners trying to escape a castle prison. Some tried crawling through a sewer pipe that was so tight they could barely inch forward, let alone back themselves up if they came to a grate or a dead end or a tight corner. They didn’t even know if it would lead them to freedom. It was just a chance that it might. To me, this Mars mission is even more insane than starting down that pipe.

But I want some input into how I’ll live and what I’ll do when I get there.

Hard labor. That's my guess. They're not going to pay people to lay around. You're going to be outside in the cosmic rays, doing construction work, which I'm sure is the reason they wouldn't have me. How hard can you work when you're 84? Not very. They'd love you at 50, though. But I think that's a little too young. Life expectancy isn't going to be that great, a few years, what with constant radiation exposure, work hazards and rudimentary medical care. Well, that's just my guess, but I wouldn't go at 50.

Go to Mexico with a new diesel pick-up truck. Closer than Mars and no way to get home alive.

Go to L.A. and make some gang signs. Pretty soon you'll be done and unlike going to Mars, there's no need to wear that funny suit.

“Most settlers in human history have known they were going on a one way trip. At least these people will be able to communicate with their loved ones by videochat.”

An excellent post. I did not read the article, but I’m guessing these explorers would be sent supplies, etc. for the duration? It would seem pretty pointless to send them up with enough supplies and air for 72 hours and a “so what is it like up there?”

“How would they pay us?”

I imagine many folks that are killing themselves due to lost jobs, etc. would love to go to Mars and have a bunch of money paid to their families each month.

Although it did say they want folks that can battle through the struggles, so.....

At least these people will be able to communicate with their loved ones by videochat.

Chat? The speed of light is 186,282.397 miles per second. Mars is between 3.1 and 22.2 light minutes from Earth. Worst case, that means almost three quarters of an hour to ask a simple question and get a simple answer.

So, "chat" is not the right word. It would be more like exchanging videos in the mail, albeit with a relatively fast mail man.

Obviously, the horrendous latency of the connection would dictate changes to normal internet protocols designed to minimize the number of "line turn-arounds".

The number of people who’ve never had a whiff of claustrophobia and then find it raging inside of an MRI, for example, is quite large. Forget the ‘dying there’ part...the 6 month journey inside a small confined tube may cause a few minds to snap before they even get there.

They haven’t really perfected that bio-dome concept here on Earth have they?

It would be easier by far to set up a selfsufficient colony in the middle of Antarctica, yet we don’t for numerous excellent reasons. The excellent reasons to not do it on Mars are even greater.

A planet requires a strong magnetic field, lot’s of water, and the seeding of microbial life to produce oxygen before it is suitable for human colonization.

How does this really differ from the earliest settler in the “New World?” They took a huge risk and most never returned to their European home land.

The New World had oxygen and water. Note that Europeans weren't loading up ships with settlers headed to Northern Greenland to prove that it could be done.

In short, the New World offered the promise of better living conditions, with a lot more freedom of action. Not always fulfilled, but the promise existed. Mars promises new settlers a crappy existence and far less freedom.

BTW, Mars gravity is less than half the problem. The problem isn’t just Mars gravity, it’s the earth and sun’s a gravity. After falling downhill from Mars’ orbit to Earth’s orbit and getting an addition and significant tug from Earth’s gravitational field, you need a lot of braking to slow up and not hurdle past earth and back to the orbit of Mars, or burn up on reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. The specific kinetic energy associated with the fall from Mars to Earth more than 8X that from the Moon to Earth.
