Sunday’s Seattle Times has an analysis on the failure of House Bill 1588 — the controversial “universal background check” measure — that gun owners have quickly seen is lacking some key perspectives.
The piece, written by Danny Westneat, looks at the switched vote of Walla Walla Rep. Maureen Walsh, a Republican who initially supported the measure. Westneat’s take is that she changed her vote because of pressure from the National Rifle Association, and that it is this sort of effort by the gun lobby that will prevent doing “anything about guns.”
According to Westneat, background checks work. He writes: “Last year there were 519,209 such checks on gun buyers and license applicants in Washington state, according to the FBI.
“I asked the FBI how many had flagged someone ineligible to own a gun,” he continued. “They don’t break the figures out by state. But the typical reject rate nationally is 1 to 2 percent.
“That may not sound like much,” he figured. “But it means 5,000 to 10,000 people in our state were denied a gun or gun permit last year. Usually because they were an ex-con, a domestic abuser or a fugitive, and sometimes due to mental illness.
“This would be worth it if only 500, or 50, of this crowd was stopped from getting guns. Yet porous as it is, the system stopped 5,000,” he said.
Westneat’s reasoning is flawed, and many Times readers say so. Where did he get the idea that all of these apparent criminals didn’t get their hands on a firearm? Just because they were turned away at a gun shop or gun show doesn’t mean they didn’t score a piece.

I’d like to see someone point out to some politician all the mass killings done by liberals. Then say “So, it looks to me like we could stop gun violence by forbidding liberals from owning firearms. And you don’t have to respond. Just sit there and look stupid.”
How many criminal denials were prosecuted?

Try doing “SOMETHING ABOUT CRIMINALS”!!!
Because NOTHING NEEDS to be done about guns!
These same liberals are the very ones who coddle the criminals!
My old real, authentic, “traditional liberal” high school teacher used to say something very much like it. He used to say, “Better to let 10 guilty men go free, then convict one innocent man”. I used to think he was crazy, but I am starting to understand his reasoning a little better now.
Anyhow, even though, I completely disagreed with him politically, he never once tried to stifle my opinions or brainwash me into accepting his. He was a true gentle man and I am grateful for his love of teaching. The liberals of today are nothing like him. They are wicked and calculating. All of this gun stuff has nothing to do with addressing real problems, it all about people control with the goal full registration so at some point they confiscate if they chose to do so.
Very true.
Criminals can be arrested and tried for their crimes - including those related to illegal firearms acquisition -- all using due process.
