Applications for gun permits have jumped in Newtown, Conn., since a school massacre there revived the national debate on gun control and led to worries about new restrictions.
Newtown in recent years has issued about 130 gun permits annually. Police say the town received 79 permit applications in the three months since the Dec. 14 massacre, well over double the normal pace.
Robert Berkins, records manager for Newtown police, says many applicants are expressing concerns that their gun rights will be taken away.

That which becomes restricted becomes more valuable and desirable.
Another thing collectivists will never understand.
The only way to stop these “massacres” is for the people to start shooting back. Stop being a victim. The freaks will get the message.
Wonder here if the Newton police are even issuing permits after Dec. 14th.
The people of any state that willing to throw their God given rights away to the point that they need to have a permit to buy a weapon are hopeless.
Yes, that is coming from a guy from PA. Don't be surprise. Check out PA's lack of gun laws and the fact that the 2nd Amendment was formed from the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania which existed before the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Personally, I like PA's constitution better: "Shall not be questioned" vs. "Shall not be infringed." I like the idea that you can't even question the idea of a right. It is pretty difficult to infringe on something without raising some questions.
I wonder how many first graders applied???
Newtown is not a liberal town. I think the people in the town knows that there are a few kooks everywhere, but Newtown and the towns around it are not the typical LIBERAL area of the state (If you gave Hartford, New ILLEGAL Haven, Bridgeport and Willimantic to Mexico, the state would not be as Blue...).
Of course, Mansfield (UConn), Middletown (Wesleyan) and New Britain (CCSU), might make those areas blue, but the towns around them aren't blue...
They’re carry permits.
