Is CNN Soft on Rapists? Steubenville Coverage Sparks Debate

A chorus of online critics has taken aim at CNN for its allegedly sympathetic coverage of two convicted rapists in Steubenville, Ohio. But the controversy raises a broader question over how to cover teenage rapists and a teenage victim in the age of social media.

By Tuesday afternoon, a petition demanding that CNN apologize for its coverage of the rape conviction of Steubenville football stars Ma'Lik Richmond, 16, and Trent Mays, 17, had mushroomed to 200,000 signatories.

"Your coverage of the … verdict Sunday morning was a complete disgrace and a breach of journalistic ethics," the petition, launched by Gabriel Garcia of Knoxville, Tenn., at Change.org reads. "I request that you apologize on-air, several times over the course of the next week, at the start of every hour."

CNN had no official comment, except to note privately that viral petitions sometimes have a life of their own and start "feeding on itself" whether or not the issue is valid.

Meanwhile two insiders at CNN exclusively told TheWrap that the controversy had hit reporter Poppy Harlow, covering the events in Steubenville, particularly hard.

What a dumb question: “Is CNN Soft on Rapists?”

Does a bear do-do in the woods?
Is the Pope Catholic?
Does the sun rise in the East and set in the West?

Captain Obvious award here.

“Is CNN Soft on Rapists?”

Doesn't that depend on whether it is "rape rape" - whether the rapist is from a protected class or popular with the protected class?

Awww let’s give Poppy as much compassion as she gave the victim. In other words, none.

Too much emphasis is placed on Football or any other sport.

These boys who are good on the playing field are allowed too much Leeway in life.

When they do wrong people look the other way. They begin to feel that they can get away with anything.
Unfortunately these boys found out too late.

Bt even now the town is behind these boys and threatening the girl. Her life is destroyed also, but she wasn’t a football star.

Bah hush up with the football shit.
I always picture jock envy when I hear the people and especially the New York media yapping about cases like this and “football culture.”
So then, what’s the excuse for the vulgar, vicious crimes occurring in non-football cultures? Like um, you know the rapes everyday by teens in New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles?
Ohio and it’s football culture is hardly the mecca of date rape or rape by teens as some in the ignorant arrogant media have people believing.

Well it certainly isn’t only football.

But certainly too much emphasis is placed on sports and not enough on studies.

I don’t know a school that doesn’t have a Football field, basketballs court, Tennis court, locker rooms, swimming pool, baseball field, and they have band uniforms and uniforms for Baseball, football and other sports, busses to take them to the games and one little filing cabinet in some teachers closet for the National Honor Society.
