Israeli Official: Chemical Weapons Used in Syria

A senior Israeli official said Wednesday that it is "apparently clear" that chemical weapons were recently used in Syria, and that the alleged attack will be a main topic of conversation with visiting President Barack Obama.

...

A senior defense official told the Associated Press that he concurred chemical weapons had been used, basing that on intelligence reports. He would not elaborate. He spoke anonymously because he is not allowed to speak to the media.

Israel has repeatedly expressed concern that Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants like Lebanon's Hezbollah, an Assad ally, or an al-Qaida-linked group fighting with the rebels.

Steinitz said that after Iran's nuclear program, the fate of Syria's chemical weapons is the second most urgent issue that will be discussed with Obama during his 48 hour visit that begins Wednesday afternoon.

"It is apparently clear that chemical weapons were used," Steinitz said. "The fact they apparently used chemical weapons against civilians needs to worry us and shows the urgency of taking care of the issue," he said.

Syrian rebels and Assad's government blamed each other Tuesday for a chemical attack on a northern village.

Syria is a small place and the use of WMD’s against an entrenched enemy would likely cause significant collateral damage.

It depends on what agent was used. Some, like Sarin, have very short life spans and can be used to wipe out an entrenched enemy, but break down naturally within a day or two. Others, like VX, can stay toxic for very long periods of time.

How long until the left changes that headline with a "slight" misplacing of punctuation?

Second reply; One of the posts above listed the agent as BZ. While not working on exactly the same methods you can think of it as an LSD gas. BZ is a nonlethal incapacitating agent. Assad wouldn’t be worried about using it in the least. It just makes the victims easier to shoot while they wander around absorbed in their hallucinations.

Well, honestly, doesn’t it all beg the question, if they haven’t used it before, whey would they do so now?

Sorry to say, and yes, I support Israel, but I’ll never support deployment of US Troops into Syria; its just another hopeless, unwinnable boondogle and I’m very suspicious of certain factions in Israel trying to trick us into doing just that!

This is a false flag operation. The rebels (Islamist extremist) probably used it on their own people to try and draw the USA into the conflict against the Syrian Government.

If a SCUD missile was used, as claimed, Israeli radar would have picked it up and known when and where it was launched from. This was no SCUD. I would also think we would have an AWAC in the area that would also pick it up.

I suspect the rebels (Islamist Extremist) obtained the chemical weapons and set them off at ground level.

Prior to the revolution Syria was despotic anti Israeli nation that was led by a rational leader. He would not attack Israel as he had no desire to die along with his nation. If the rebels win we will have a despotic anti Israeli state that will be led by deranged leaders that will attack Israel and the USA if they can. WHY IN THE HELL ARE WE SUPPORTING THE REBELS!

Even if the Syrians or other Islamic militants launched a chemical attack on Israel, Obama would likely do nothing or like with Benghazi lie about what happened.

“I just don’t get how people can be so continually stupid about this - chemical weapons in Syria simply aren’t proof that Iraq had chemical weapons in 2003...”

Come and bang your head on the wall with me for a while. I don’t think you can change anybody’s mind on this. The lie has been repeated too many times by people who don’t know a dang thing about Syria. The fact that Syria had one of the largest chemical weapons stockpiles in the world prior to any problems with Iraq means absolutely nothing to people who claim to somehow know what chemical weapons in Syria came from Iraq and what weapons didn’t.

While it is possible Iraqi chem weapons were sent to Syria ahead of ther American invasion, nobody knows. Anything else is all talk and posturing.

I've also heard claims that Saddam's chemical weapons ended up in Libya.

But, if you will allow me to don my tin-foil hat: what if that "truck convoy to Syria" wasn't chemical weapons at all?

Do you remember the facility in Syria that was bombed by Israel, out of the blue? Syria never protested, they just quickly bulldozed it and plowed what remained into the ground.

I've always wonder what was going on there, and spurred Israel to commit to a preemptive attack.

More information about the Israeli mission:

Operation Orchard

There's much more information that I remember. I didn't hear about the IAEA investigation until now.

The article links the Syrians to the North Koreans. But I'll ask directly: what if Saddam sent all his support equipment for uranium refining and enrichment to Syria?

There is no unnamed Israeli official- he is:

Yuval Steinitz, the newly appointed minister of intelligence and strategic affairs, conflicts with U.S. assessments

“...what if Saddam sent all his support equipment for uranium refining and enrichment to Syria?”

Very possible. We really don’t know what was transportd, only that stuff was transported. Anyone acting like they know, doesn’t.

Nice article. There was a lot in it that I didn’t know. Thanks for sharing.

Apparently some FR posters are too young to remember that former Nazi officials including SS officers, got refuge in Syria under the various dictators since the end of WW2, including one named “Aloyisus” or something close to that.

They ran the Syrians CBW programs and were possibly the targets of the Israeli Mossad.

Add in the Russians over the past 50 years and you have another group of CBW specialists.

What is not known is whether the No. Koreans were in Syria and if so what they were working on (nuclear weapons, CBW, missile development, terrorism training, etc). There have been reports of their presence but I don’t have any real documentation to support it.

However, it is reasonable since the No. Koreans have shown up en force in Zimbabwe in the past, and possibly had helped Gaddaffi with his nuclear/CBW programs.

When I was a journalist in Vietnam/Cambodia, I heard reports that the So. Korean troops (ROK) had picked up No. Korean voice traffic in theater. Again, no hard documentation but I heard it from several sources.

Never underestimate the determination of our enemies to get involved in nearly every country in the world if it would be to their benefit in their fights against us.

The North Koreans were definitely involved with the nuclear reactor that Israel took out on Sept 6, 2007.

An article to that effect was posted on FR during the past week, written by a national security advisor to President Bush.
