'The last surviving member of the team which first conquered Everest in 1953 has died in a Derbyshire nursing home.
George Lowe, 89, died in Ripley on Wednesday after a long-term illness, with his wife Mary by his side.
New Zealand-born M Lowe was part of the team that helped Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the summit in 1953.
Family friend and historian Dr Huw Lewis-Jones paid tribute to a "gentle soul and fine climber" who shunned the limelight.
Mr Lowe also took part in the trans-Antarctic expedition of 1957-58, which made the first successful overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole.
He later made expeditions to Greenland, Greece and Ethiopia.'

In 1946 Edmund Hillary was an obscure beekeeper.
Mrs Clinton was named after him pretty cool huh
Remember the rules — liberals are allowed to say and do anything and will not be called out on it. So Hillary Clinton can tell that stupid story and we’re not supposed to say anything.
I have never understood why people want to climb mountains. British climber George Mallory in 1924 famously said “because it’s there” but hell so are volcanoes but people don’t voluntarily climb into them “because they are there”. Now I understand there were no helicopters in 1924 that could transport you to the top of any mountain so maybe I can cut old George some slack. But as for Sir Hillary, there were helicopters available when he did it so no excuses for him! :-))
Because they're there.
Wrigley: Who are you looking for?
Miles Massey: Tenzing Norgay.
Wrigley: Tenzing Norgay? That’s someone she slept with?
Miles Massey: I doubt it. Tenzing Norgay was the Sherpa that helped Edmund Hillary climb Mt. Everest.
Wrigley: And Marilyn knows him?
Miles Massey: No, you idiot. Not the Tenzing Norgay. Her Tenzing Norgay.
Wrigley: I’m not sure that I actually follow that.
Miles Massey: Few great accomplishments are achieved single-handedly, Wrigley. Most have their Norgays. Marilyn Rexroth is even now climbing her Everest. I wanna find her Norgay.
Wrigley: But how do you determine which of the people on here are...
Miles Massey: How do you spot a Norgay?
Miles Massey: You start with the people with the funny names.
After climbing many mountains, I understand. I also understand why those who have not done so will never understand until they have done so, when they will immediately understand.
