The whole idea of Earth Hour is not too bright
National Post ^ | March 22, 2013 | Bjørn Lomborg

Posted on 03/22/2013 12:58:20 PM PDT by Squawk 8888

On the evening of March 23, 1.3 billion people will go without light at 8:30 — and at 9:30, and at 10:30 — and for the rest of the night, just like they do every other night of the year. With no access to electricity, darkness after sunset is a constant reality for these people.

At the same time, another one billion people will participate in “Earth Hour” by turning off their lights from 8:30-9:30.

The organizers say that they are providing a way to demonstrate one’s desire to “do something” about global warming. But the reality is that Earth Hour teaches all the wrong lessens, and it actually increases CO2 emissions. Its vain symbolism reveals exactly what is wrong with today’s feel-good environmentalism.

Earth Hour teaches us that tackling global warming is easy. Yet, by switching off the lights, all we are doing is making it harder to see.

Notice that you have not been asked to switch off anything really inconvenient, like your heating or air-conditioning, television, computer, mobile phone or any of the myriad technologies that depend on affordable, plentiful energy electricity and make modern life possible. If switching off the lights for one hour per year really were beneficial, why would we not do it for the other 8,759?

I guess once water goes through the powerhouse it’s just gone for good. Who knew?

Well, if it wasn't gone for good they'd call it a rain "cycle" or something like that...

Lowes is starting to carry more types of LED lighting including 60 watt bulb (14W) replacements. I bought one for 25 bucks and promptly dropped it on the concrete floor and broke it when replacing the 60 watt bulb in my garage. I wonder how long it will take me to recoup my costs?

“Leaving outside lights on is a cheap and effective crime prevention measure. “

So were small caliber bullets when they were affordable. I still think they have less environmental impact, even if they are made of lead.

“Yeah Hobart is the budget div of Miller.
My B-I-L used to be a sales rep for them.

For amateurs it’s fine.”

Yep, it’s nice when the factory tech reps will get on a forum over the weekend and tell you how to fix a possible problem in a 10 year old machine for $5. worth of parts that you can buy over the internet. I don’t know what your BIL’s experience was, but I haven’t heard anything but compliments about their customer service.

Well I don’t feel like blaring all my lights like everyone else so I’m gonna go make a tire fire in the backyard ;-)

As long as i’m paying for it i’ll use all the electricity I want to and that’s probably double what i need to live.

I hate switching lights and TVs on and off as I move about the house and our computers are on 24/7!!

Spring comes when it feels like it.

Not really; as "spring" has a set definition - the time of year between the vernal equinox and the longest day of the year.

TEMPERATURE has nothing to do with it.

Note that the above is for the Northern hemisphere.

"Spring" starts 6 months later in Australia.

I’m not fooled. Half the people on this site tell me that China is actually a backwards, Third World, country - yep, that they do. These pictures are OBVIOUSLY Photoshopped.

Maybe you’re the one who was sent to explain to us western Washingtonians why summer begins on July 5th up here. Would you be she?
