The Tokyo District Court has sentenced US musician Richard Hinds (19) to a maximum of 10 years for strangling Irish exchange student Nicola Furlong.
Delivering the guilty verdict, a nine-member panel of judges called the murder last May 24th "atrocious and vicious in nature" and said Hindss account of what happened was "not credible."

She was subsequently (probably) drugged, (probably) raped, and then (proven in court) strangled by Richard Hinds.
His punishment? Five years minimum; ten years maximum in a Japanese prison.
On the good side, life expectancy for Americans in Japanese prisons is about 6 years. He can appeal his case, and say the appeal court now sentences him to 6 years. They don’t substitute the 10 year sentence with the 6 year sentence, rather they append another 6 years to the 10 years because of the inconvenience it has caused the court. ..or so it is rumored amongst those who don’t speak Japanese being tried in court.
i’m getting pretty tired of all the racist based murders
5 year minimum for murdering a woman seems a bit on the light side to me. I know some women who might be worth the 5 years.
Not mentioning any names.
She was a pretty girl.
Thats what you call hard time. Japanese prisons are not like those in the West.Hinds may not survive it. That would be a very good thing IMHO. http://www.nytimes.com/1996/07/08/world/prisons-in-japan-are-safe-but-harsh.html http://www.stripes.com/news/ex-marine-decries-nature-of-japan-prison-work-1.21905

He must not have been able to find a white baby to strangle.
When will these girls ever learn?
You can bet had the black dude killed a Japanese coed the penalty would have been a lot different.
Who knew that the “green light” for black on white
assaults and murder from Holder and the DO”J”
would take traction overseas, too?
If she were ugly he’d still be a murderer and deserve it.
Response:Too soft, even though some claim Japanese prisons are harsh. He should have been hung within a few hours of his killing the girl. His death should have been carried out without discussion, debate or the expression of different points of view. Harsh, Absolutely, but it shows a people exist and they will not be played with.
5 years in a Japanese prison is definitely no cakewalk. Their prisons are WAY different from ours.
That’s a life sentence in Japan. They pretty much let the prisoners ‘deal’ with each other.
Hopefully his prison will be like the one portrayed in the ultraviolent and grotesque bulldada movie “The Tale of Ricky”.
But in real terms, I imagine that the Yakuza in prison with him are not going to be very kind to the Doujin (Japanese slang for blacks, “dirt person”).
Too bad. 18 or 19 is still a minor.
True. In about 90% of murders, I prefer the death penalty. It takes a whole lot in terms of mitigating circumstances before I’ll settle for life without parole, and the victim’s looks are not relevant on that account. It was just an observation.
Sorry, it is true that she is pretty. My concer is that there is a social bias that increases penalties if the victim is attractive and decreases them for an attractive perpetrator.
I feel the same way you do about the death penalty and I’d like to see a special court for death penalties with top jurists. It would include serious penalties to evidence rules violations by investigators, witnesses and presecutors. Appeals would be quick and the execution would follow swiftly as well.
