Gay marriage protesters take to the streets in Paris
France 24 ^ | 24 March 2013 | Olivia SALAZAR WINSPEAR

Tens of thousands opposed to French legislation allowing gay marriage protested Sunday on a route leading to the Champs Elysees after police banned them marching on the famed Paris avenue.

The hugely controversial bill to legalise same-sex marriage and adoption has been comfortably adopted by the lower chamber of parliament and will go to the Senate for examination and approval in April.

The upper house is unlikely to prevent the groundbreaking reform from becoming law by the summer. The protestors want the government to withdraw the project and put it to a referendum.

The demonstrators highlighted France's flagging economy, beset by mass layoffs and spiralling unemployment, attacking Socialist President Francois Hollande's government of ignoring pressing issues while pushing ahead with his election pledge of "Marriage for All."

Banners held up from balconies read: "We want work not gay marriage," and "No to gayxtremism."

The Paris police had turned down a request from the protest organisers to march on the Champs Elysees on the ground it would be a threat to public order, partly because it borders the French presidential palace.

The demonstrators lined a five-kilometre (three-mile) route from the Paris business district of La Defence to the roundabout where the Arc de Triomphe is located.

Police sprayed teargas to keep up to 200 protestors from trying to march on the Champs Elysees, AFP photographers said.

Organisers claimed that at least 1.4 million had taken part but police put the number at around 300,000.

As the demonstrators gathered under chilly, grey skies, an organiser exhorted them on a megaphone to periodically lift their arms and legs to keep warm.

"We understand your frustration but please remain in the same place," he said.

The movement against gay marriage has given France a new celebrity in the form of its public face, Virginie Tellenne, a Parisian socialite who goes by the name of Frigide Barjot.

Her assumed name -- a play on the name of French film star Brigitte Bardot, a sex symbol in the 1960s -- translates as Frigid Loony.

"We want the president to deal with the economy and leave the family alone," Tellenne said Sunday.

Somewhere between 340,000 and 800,000 demonstrators had flooded into the capital for an anti-gay marriage march in January.

A campaign orchestrated by the Catholic Church and belatedly backed by the mainstream centre-right opposition has steadily gathered momentum.

But Hollande's support for the legislation has not wavered and his partner, Valerie Trierweiler, has revealed that the president will be attending the marriages of gay friends once the legislation is on the statute books.

Gay men and women can already adopt as individuals in France if approved by social services.

A separate law on providing medically assisted conception to gay couples, already extended to heterosexual couples unable to conceive, will be debated later in the year.

I'd go with the higher numbers. A previous protest drew a gigantic crowd, more than a couple hundred thousand IIRC. It's incredibly horrible how governments are influenced by a teeny percentage of mentally ill sex perverts. It's almost as though they want to destablize society for their own aims...

Anyone wanting on/off either ping list, FREEPMAIL me.

I’m very surprised. Who knew that the French people would be this openly conservative? I would guess that the numbers might be substantially higher than 300,000.

Just looking at the pictures online, there’s plenty of young people there too. The media and governments may have the megaphone but the West may yet have a pulse in these people who are otherwise live quietly.

I am so glad that you noticed that.

Too often do I see Americans disparaging the French especially when it comes to giving in to islam.

Americans had better notice that the French don’t have a muslim president and don’t have muzzies in high national security positions.

Over the past 40 years or so, the official French position has been very accomodating to Islam and the Arab world. This has had two motivations. The first was rooted in De Gaulle's desire to poke a finger in Uncle Sam's eye, and accomodating Islam was part and parcel of the same attitude that kept France out of NATO. The second was rooted in the same antisemitic spitefulness that allowed the French to collaborate so enthusiastically with the Nazis.

Since 9/11, however, the French have been faced with an increasingly assertive and belligerent Muslim minority, which, by virtue of immigration from former French North African colonies, is far larger than what we have to deal with in the US.

It looks like the French may be putting their foot down on a number of issues the progressives hold dear. Good on them.

Quite frankly, the massive anti-gay marriage protests in France have given me a 10X more favorable view of the French people than when they elected Nicholas "I despise Netanyahu" Sarkozy and we were supposed to be elated and forgive their treason because he likes to vacation in the USA.

Driving through Dijon en route to the burial place of Bernadette Soubirous one Tuesday morning, one of our traveling companions, looking out the window at the rolling green hills and the vinyards, said, “God really blessed France”.

Then we stopped for lunch at a restaurant and ate outside under blooming fruit trees and ate burgers and fries. Not like the Burger King her husband was craving, but like from one of the happy herefords in the back 40.

I know some Frenchies realize it. I’ve met them.

And this is why the left hates the CC.

I am in touch with a young man in Switzerland. The conservative movement in Europe is really fired up over IMMIGRATION. Generacion Identitaire. They go after and collaborate on other social issues as well. They are helping me pound back the Federation Republican Womens poll on giving amnesty to Dreamers & work program. They have satellite groups in all the major Euro cities. They do very Theatrical protests with colored smoke and flaming sticks through the streets. Visiting cultural icons to reiterate their connection to national identity and culture. Killer photos on their facebook pages.Feeding their hungry countrymen in the street to point out the fact that “strangers” are better cared for than their own.

It’s always so much more convenient to go on a vacation when the taxpayer foots your bill.

They do NOT all speak english, even and especially if they know it. They want their cultural heritage and they are a holes about it. Good for them. We are McD eating surrender monkeys for putting up with it.

Not I.

But don't forget, American conservatives were also supposed to love Sarko because he has a "beautiful (liberal) wife" and children.

I was being sort of sarcastic...

It’s horrible watching demons in human form destroy human civilization. Really, it’s nothing less than that.

This has little to do with being conservative but more to do with resisting a return to the uncivilized way of the ancient world when sodomites did as they pleased.
