In May, New England's fishermen will again see a cut to the number of fish they can catch, this time so deeply that the historic industry's existence is threatened from Rhode Island to Maine. But as hard as the cuts are likely to hit fishing communities, local seafood eaters may not notice at all. In the region's markets, grocery stores and restaurants, imported fish dominate, and the cuts make that less likely to change.
The cuts will shrink the catch limit 77 percent for cod in the Gulf of Maine and 61 percent for cod in Georges Bank, off southeastern Massachusetts. That's the worst of a series of reductions to the catch of bottom-dwelling groundfish, such as haddock and flounder, that many fear could be fatal to the industry.

Here in Md. they paid farmers not to raise tobacco for ten years.
The ten years is about up.
Many barns have fallen down equipment has rusted and fallen apart, farmers have found other jobs.
Most could not go back to raising tobacco even if they wanted to for these rason and the fact that a labor intensive industry has lost it’s labor force.
Much of the same will happen in new England, Boats will all apart, nets will go bad and fishermen will find different jobs or go on the poublic dole.
This is the great plan. Yes it’s stupid, but it will happen, the fishing industry in new England will die, and foreigners will soon be fishing our waters.
Why should we produce anything? We can always just print greenbacks and import all the stuff we need!
We refuse to purchase any seafood which is not a product of the USA. The US river catfish is almost inedible—local pond-caught fish has been good.
I have had this feeling for months now that something very”fishy” is going on between Obama’s handlers and the Communist Chinese.
I’m seeing more and more fish and shellfish coming from China.
I see that stamped on the package and put it right back.

They wanted to wipe out small farmers with the food safety bill in favor of industrial ag. Now they want to wipe out small fishermen for industrial seafood. It’s all tied into controlling the food supply. If you’re too weak to pull the trigger, the 2nd Ammendment doesn’t mean much.
They have for decades. Back in the late 70s the Federal fishery managers made a point of telling us that as far as they were concerned who fished our waters was all about who would pay them the most money.
They did not care about our jobs, lives, or anything else, just about the money flowing into Federal coffers.
American commercial fishermen only pay into the Treasury tax money which is insignificant compared to what a state sponsored foreign fishery operation is willing to pay.
The effect is happening as planned and is devastating to those involved. The more devastating the better. Lessons to others and all that.
Most commercial fishermen either already have other jobs shore-side, or are too old to start over... which leaves the later with humiliation, food stamps and welfare.

Neither. It is a politically and monetarily motivated plan being flawless executed by the left for the past 40 years against all natural resource harvesters. The public pays the freight at the grocery store.
The goal is to eliminate all US natural resource harvesting other than by a certain ‘disadvantaged’ racial group entitled to do so by treaty and enshrined in the Constitution.

Trouble is that most of the US caught seafood is exported. So it is hard to find at a reasonable price from any grocer who knows the difference between fish and beef.
Same way with Maryland farmers.

I did read how a majority of the fish eaten in the US comes from foreign sources... even when domestic sources for the same fish exist.
instead of limiting domestic catch, they should be increasing tariffs on imports, helping to shift the market to domestic suppliers
people should point out that the ppl in govt aren’t trying to help them... but make them more dependent on govt assistance
