NRA bombards Newtown residents with robo calls(barf alert)
WFSB ^

A little more than three months after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a series of robo calls hoping to pressure politicians from passing anti-gun legislation is causing outrage.

While state lawmakers are trying to come up with a comprehensive bill aimed at reducing gun violence and improving safety, the National Rifle Association is calling homes and calling on voters to pressure local leaders into rejecting any new gun control laws.

"Calling from 703-267-1200 with an urgent legislative alert. Your state senator, Art Linares, will play a key role in determining whether the CT General Assembly will pass legislation restricting your gun rights," the call said.

The Huffington Post recently posted a recording of one of the calls that is making its way into homes, including those in Newtown.

"Respectfully urge him to oppose any legislation that tramples your Second Amendment right, and inhibits your inherent right to self defense," the call continued.

For a town touched by tragedy, some feel it's still too raw, calling the calls callous and inappropriate.

On the Newtown Action Alliance Facebook page, one man asked that his name and phone number be removed from the list, but he's still getting the calls.

The NRA is allowed to make these robo calls because it is a nonprofit.

In addition to the pre-recorded calls, the organization is also sending out postcards with similar messages. The calls and postcards come as Connecticut lawmakers continue to take up gun control.

"I think it's disgusting and I think it's intentional," United States Sen. Chris Murphy said. "I don't think it's a mistake that the NRA is making calls into Newtown."

The push from the NRA is timed just as local lawmakers are crafting numerous gun reform laws that could make our state one of the toughest on weapons. Lawmakers are now seeing these calls as another element to fight in this battle.

"We will be matching their effort here in Connecticut and with allies throughout the country," said United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

Last week, the Public Safety and Security Committee passed a bill that would require criminal background checks for all private firearm sales. Now it will go to the General Assembly for a full vote.

The people in the comments section are ripping WFSB a new one pointing out that the NRA is apparently calling residents in the entire state.

Also, it was reported here recently that their was a huge uptick in pistol permits in Newtown.

Apparently its not too raw for the left to swoop in and use the very victims in photo ops and gun control props whether they like it or not.

At least you can hang up the dang phone.

Exactly. I have read numerous article from various CT news publications. Almost all the comments are pro-2A. The demand for gun control is in the Malloy’s head.

The NRA needs to rethink the use of robocalls. Many people find robocalls for any issue extremely intrusive.

The NRA also needs to rethink spamming its own members. I joined this year and wish I had used a fake e-mail address. They have spammed me with everything from insurance sales pitches to ads for hearing aids.

The end does not justify the means.

Next time some other 2nd amendment origination will get my money.

Everyday I have to listen to the liberal media equating ME to a murdering maniac because I wish to express my 2nd Amendment Rights! Where is the outrage for my sensibilities?

I am paying the NRA to protect my civil rights. I say keep it up.

They should have a option to un-subscribe from them at the bottom of each email.

I am not annoyed at the NRA’s robo calls.I am annoyed that we have two senators representing the state of Connecticut that don’t respect the bill of rights, which the Second Amendment is part of.

If these two clowns are so thrilled at voiding the Second Amendment what other Dangerous amendments would they be willing to void?

The First, the Fourth,Where will they stop?

I actually had one of Murphy’s staff tell me Murphy was for the 2nd Amendment. When I asked why he supports legislation that would put restrictions on it, they didn’t have a answer. When I asked what his postilion on putting restrictions the 1st Amercement was, they hung up.

I too hate robo-calls and I think this is a mistake on the part of the NRA, but as a life member I still support them, all large organizations make dumb mistakes once in a while.

Having said that, people may not fully understand the current attitude in Newtown.

Can we know for sure that it’s the NRA making the calls? If I wanted to discredit the NRA, this would be a good start.

I live in the state and have gotten like 4 of these calls. No where near Newtown.

Newtown’s state senator is McKinney. Linares is in Portland, Chester, Essex, East Haddam area.
