Rand Paul: American's wont pick crops for $8/hour when they can sit at home and get welfare
WND ^ | WND

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who has emerged as the key advocate for secure borders, keeping to the rules and an organized handling of the millions of illegal aliens now inside the United States says there is a clear goal that Americans should have for the newcomers: Make them taxpayers.

“What I’m saying is let’s get them work visas, normalize them, tax them, make them taxpayers,” the senator said in an exclusive interview with WND reporter Taylor Rose.

...

“You can’t have open borders and be a welfare state,” he warned. The solution is a secure border – and a process where someone on a work visa doesn’t get welfare, or someone with a green card doesn’t get welfare.

Paul said there are glitches, too, in America’s social services. There shouldn’t be 60,000 new people on the roles of the disabled every month, he said. In other words, America’s safety net sometimes is just too generous.

The reasons some Americans won’t work for the $8 per hour for an agricultural field worker, for example, is that they would rather do nothing and collect higher government benefits, he said.

That’s true, it won’t be all; just between 60 and 75%.

There is very little chance we’d ever do better than that so long as mass immigration continues. The only way we’ll ever avoid a total rout with them is if mass immigration comes to an end (legal and illegal) and assimilation has time to work.

The point is the illegals are here anyway. It makes no sense to try and round them up and send them to Mexico City and tell them to then apply for citenzship. It’s just not possible. So offer them a route: apply as you would from Mexico City and get in line. We’ll deal with you when we get to you in about 10-15 years. In the mean time learn about the constitution, free markets and logon to freerepublic where you will get educated rather than spat at and mistreated. The GOP welcomes you if you want to work. That’s what the message should be and that’s the only way we’ll ever win again.

RE :”Does it matter if they apply from Mexico City or from El Paso, Texas?”

YES, you want to be a US citizen and vote like me?
then you go back outside the US and apply just like the others and get in fing line and follow the rules like everyone else does.

What is US citizenship and the vote like handing out free samples of gum to you?

If the border is secure and new technology like DRONES are used (yes Rand doesn’t mind using drones for proper things like surveillance just not killing them!) then hopefully the tide can be stemmed of illegal crossings. Legal immigration and giving more visas out can only happen if there’s jobs for them and businesses need the immigrant. If the immigrant is working and not claiming welfare then he has a good work ethic and I would argue when/if he becomes a citizen is more likely to be a GOP voter after he sees how the Democrat policies work out.

They’re all here anyway, how are you going to round up 11 million people and send them back to Mexico City and tell them to apply legally in order to back in? It’s just not possible.

Now you are talking like paul.

Who TF here is telling illegals to apply for citizenship?
Who is rounding them up to force them to be citizens?

You know that is nonsense,
Rand is offering them US citizenship after their breaking in and living here illegally. that is wrong.

If they want to vote then they need to get on line and that line forms OUTSIDE this country.

This is really your argument?

They are going to be paying payroll tax. At the end of the year, any witholds as to income tax are going to be given back...

I have always thought that the quickest way to reduce illegal immigration is just to set the tax rates higher for non-citizen workers. So the payroll tax, for example, could be 20% instead of 12.4%. And to keep the liberals happy the burden could be on the employer. Also no EIC for non-citizens.

What employer would take the risk of hiring an illegal immigrant if it meant the IRS could show up a couple of years later and recover the taxes you failed to pay - plus penalties, interest, etc.? Nobody, since we all know the government would be out looking for any illegal immigrant they could find on a business' payroll since they would be a goldmine of taxes and penalties.

Also, any illegal immigrant who didn't pay the tax would be a tax evader, and there is no way the federal government is going to look the other way at that. They need the money too much.

Illegal immigrants already pay tens of thousands of dollars to smugglers. Why not capture that money too - charge fees for expedited visas.

Your straw-man that anyone wants to round up illegals to force them to become citizens to vote (Dem) here is just dishonest.

But in a way you are useful.

Did you not read or listen to his recent speech about immigration? It was full of immigrant romanticism and nauseating platitudes. It was the type of empty garbage I’d expect to hear from a Bush, but not an alleged original like Paul.

I liked the Paul that suggested pairing legalization of illegals with a moratorium on legal immigration. But I guess he’s abandoned that sensible idea.

Yes, I know Paul has been careful about endorsing a path to citizenship, but that will be the inevitable result for those given legal status. Why would Democrats settle for anything less?

And there is no escaping the fact that support for unending mass immigration - even if it’s all legal - is incompatible with the type of small government ideals Paul champions.

Rand is dead right as usual.

IF, by that, you mean his plan to provide Amnesty for 2 million Illegals each and every year based on the "Certification" that the Border is secure by a congress whose majority already think the border is secure, then you are DEAD WRONG.

One solution may be to charge non-citizens significantly higher taxes, so many leave on their own. If it cost them an extra $3000 per year for ten years before they got a chance to apply for citizenship many illegal immigrants may just go home. Better yet just provide a long term visa - no voting, and a higher, but not as high, tax rate for them and anyone employing them.

How about doing something innovative, principled, and honorable like denying them any social services except emergency health care.

How about using E-Verify for all employment positions no matter how trivial?

How long do you think they would stay around if they couldn't get a job, couldn't get unemployment, couldn't get any type of welfare?

That's right, they would self-deport.

How about we just do the right thing and not capitulate to the left and give them an unbeatable electoral advantage?

Rand Paul's Amnesty plan is just plain wrong.

Harvesting work is PART TIME! This crap that Americans will not do the work is B.S. How do you support yourself only working 6 months a year? Any other business would have to pay unemployment insurance and lay you off when the work ended. If your down and need to earn some cash, sure pick some fruit, work hard and save your money. When the work is done invest in yourself. It's not a career, but a start. When a individual can collect welfare year round, they have no incentive to earn and invest in themselves! think about this next time you spend $6.00 a gallon for orange juice!

He’s offering them a work visa.

You’re offering to break up their families, put them in concentration camps and send them back home.

Nobody supports your position.

It’s too costly, it’s inhumane and a huge challenge to try and do it successfully.

It’s all about numbers. I don’t think we’ll ever win them over so long as the flow is large. We just won’t agree on that I guess.

As to jobs, well, I don’t think immigration policy should necessarily be determined by labor needs. And besides if there is a labor shortage then the market would respond with higher wages and innovation. But putting all of that aside, most visas are not work related today. Family-based visas are the largest category, and they haven’t gone unfilled during the recent recession. If we must have more workers come here from abroad then let’s first end chain migration by restricting family immigration to spouses and minor dependent children. Let’s abolish Ted Kennedy’s 50,000 Diversity Visas we hand out each year via a lottery. Let’s cut back on refugee settlements. Doing all of that would free up plenty of visas for workers.

Until he drops the other shoe regarding granting amnesty to illegal aliens to do the job.

Jim,
Rand Paul's plan is Amnesty, plain and simple, whether or not his plan makes them citizens.

Just by "Normalizing" their legal status he has forgiven their illegality, removed it. That is the definition of Amnesty.

They don't have to leave the country under his plan, which is the legal consequence of their actions.

They don't have to go to jail for the Identity Fraud that most of them have practiced.

Out of one side of his mouth he says he doesn't believe in Amnesty, and then out of the other side of his mouth he wants to give them Amnesty.

Rand Paul is a Liar!

There in lies the age old problemo...the borders ARE NOT going to be secured (JNap says they already are!) and WELFARE WON'T STOP (NO politician, on either side, will propose that...it's raciss, etc.).

So, NO THANKS, Rand! Just enforce EXISTING immigration laws and THEY'LL SELF DEPORT. Amnesty for 11 - 30 million will be the final nail.

Because standing on principle is so difficult, so Rand Paul would rather pander to the Illegals.
