Navy Announces USS Gabrielle Giffords
abc ^ | Feb 10, 2012 3:38pm | Luis Martinez

The Navy’s newest ship will be the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement at a Pentagon ceremony today, calling Giffords someone whose name is synonymous with courage.

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords looked on at the Pentagon as Mabus made the announcement in a public ceremony. Also in attendance at this afternoon’s brief ceremony in the Pentagon Courtyard was Roxana Green, the mother of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.

Christina-Taylor was among those killed in last year’s deadly shooting rampage in Tucson that targeted Giffords as she met constituents outside a supermarket. Roxana Green will be the ship’s sponsor.

Giffords is still recovering from the gunshot wounds to her head that she suffered during last January’s shooting incident. She stepped down from Congress two weeks ago.

The ship named today for her, which has yet to be built, will be the Navy’s 10th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a new kind of ship designed to bring the Navy fighting power into shallow coastal areas. The first two ships in this class were called Freedom and Independence, but the conventional practice since then has been to name the other ships in the class after a city.

“It’s very appropriate that LCS 10 be named for someone who has become synonymous with courage, who has inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit,” said Mabus.

Mabus said the notion occurred to him that this would be a “fitting tribute” not only to Giffords but to Navy families because she was a Navy spouse. Her husband, Mark Kelly, was until recently an astronaut and Navy pilot.

No it’s not. It’s another attempt to inshrine Giffords into the liberal sainthood and it’s disgusting.

Carter, who was the second worst President in living memory, and probably in history, (Obama is the first, IMHO, and Clinton the 3rd) at least served honorably in the Navy when he was younger.

This naming for Giffords is simply a political pandering gesture and nothing more. It is sad.

I am sorry for what she endured...but many, many people endure that. Many of them our own soldiers who not only endure more...but who knowingly and willingly sacrifice themselves while so doing to save their fellow soldiers and/or accomplish the mission they have been ordered to do.

This woman was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and the victim of a crazed liberal mad-man. She did not choose to put herself in harm’s way for the greater good.

That does no diminish her siffering in the least...but it should make all the difference in the world when it comes to naming a combat ship.

It is not the entire Navy that is bad in this, it is the Secretary who is making the naming decisions...and he is a political appointee. Wishing that one of our major combatants be sunk be an enemy with the resulting loss of life of many good, loyal, and dedicated Americans is not an answer at all, my friend. I know you are upset over this, but it is beneath you to wish for that in the slightest way.

At least I will give the current Secretary of the Navy credit recently for deciding that the 3rd Ford Class carrier, to start building in the next year or so, will be the USS Enterprise, CVN-80, in honor of the other USS Enterprises that have served so honorably, and in particular the last two USS Enerprise carriers, CV-6 from World War II, and CVN-65, our first nuclear carrier which was just retired.

That was a justafiable and good decision...this was not. This was a ludicrous decisiion and, IMHO, makes a mockery of the process.

The sad part is, the ship will likely take a missile to the command center/bridge.

What a joke and now I find that a guy only has to do two pulls ups to get in the marines and 3 to graduate.
One for women and two to graduate for the women to join the marines

It;s a joke and to think you se the UK Ryal marine commandos ad compared to the awful social justice agenda on TV today

if you get a chance pal see post 184 and then watch those links as it tells us how our Govt is now wanting to change what our military does.
Storming a beach to go to those who are needing help and tyranny and then giving out aid.

I’m about 50% there to talking my boys not to join the seals or Recon and it seems I will be the last if they listen to me to serve their country in generations

“I guess we can expect the USS Yoko Ono and the USS Jim Carrey next for their “courage” in the liberals’ fight against the Bill of Rights.”

I’m guessing the “Jane Fonda” and “Dan Rather” can’t be far behind.

Gabby Giffords is a perfect inspiration for our new National Security Strategy.

She stood oblivious of the threat and was passively shot while offering no resistance. She remains an advocate of weakness and unpreparedness.

put it this way, any solid christian considering joining should consider if it is worth it for a dishonorable discharge for standing up for your christian values, and lose employment and 2a rights.

not saying you won’t be rewarded but i don’t think most people think it through this far and consider they could still be good christians and keep fighting and keep their rights, in the civilian world.

I’d be a hero too if some insane jerk shot me and I lived through the horrible experience.

But would the central socialist government name a ship after me?

Kyle would be eligible for his own destroyer. A shallow water littoral would be a bit of an insult to him. These things are a step above a river boat or monitor. But imagine a Somali pirate explaining to his buds he was run down by a ship named after a woman? There’s probably a natural place for this thing.

Less-than-lethal ship?

Rubber bullets only?

And a loud whistle.

Other appropriate names:
USS Gag Me
USS Kumbaya
USS Feel Good

I'm outraged -- outraged, I tell you! that they haven't yet named a ship for Fred Rogers or Michael Jackson. Where's the love?
