Skip to comments.Texas Biolab Loses Deadly Guanarito Virus
Posted on 03/25/2013 8:57:36 PM PDT by dragnet2
The Galveston National Laboratory lost one of five vials containing a deadly Venezuelan virus, according to the University of Texas Medical Branch, which owns the $174 million facility designed with the strictest security measures to hold the deadliest viruses in the country.
Like Ebola, the missing Guanarito virus causes hemorrhagic fever, an illness named for "bleeding under the skin, in internal organs or from body orifices like the mouth, eyes, or ears," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"This is clearly an incident that is very discomforting and embarrassing to the University of Texas Medical Center and their national biosecurity lab that they have there,"
"The mortality is anywhere from at least 10 to 20 percent or slightly more," Kurilla told ABCNews.com, adding that there is no treatment or cure for Guanarito. "That is considered very, very severe if you have a 1 in 5 chance of dying without anything to do for the person other than provide supportive hospital care."
The Galveston researchers were conducting a routine inspection on March 20 and 21 when they noticed there were only four Guanarito vials instead of five.

” vials containing a deadly Venezuelan virus...”
Thought it was dead already.
Anyone named Mohammed working in that lab? After all, we must celebrate diversity!/sarcasm
Read Return of the Black Death by Susan Scott and Christopher Duncan. The book studies the plagues from 1347 to 1666 that killed half the population of Europe. The authors prove that it wasn't Bubonic Plague from rat fleas that caused the Black Death like everyone was taught in school, it was a hemorrhagic virus transmitted from person to person.
I would fire and jail the director of this lab. Pension gone. Seriously. Fire, jail and pension gone for anyone who was responsible for handling/keeping it recorded where it was supposed to be.
Anyway, I didn't know there was such a lab there. A hurricane coming into Galveston could tear the building to pieces and a number of those buildings were flooded due to Ike. I think that's a poor place to have deadly diseases.
Thankfully it is not spread by humans.
Not that we know of.
There are actually three forms of Bubonic Plague, which are somewhat dependent on the state of the immune system of the patient. The bubonic form is the least fatal, as there is still an effective lymphatic system which collects the toxins/bacteria in the lymph nodes which swell up and turn black. The second highly fatal form is septicemic which basically poisons the blood in a person with weak immunity. The third highly fatal pneumonic/hemorrhagic form is transmitted from person to person through the air. Here is the Center for Disease Control on the subject.
Bubonic plague is endemic among the wild rodent populations of something like 17 western states. The Black Rat in Europe seems to have been particulaly effective in spreading the disease as it lived upstairs with the people. The Norwegian gray rat which is so common in our cities is a cellar and sewer dweller where it and its fleas comes into less contact with people.
If we were in crisis with a major outbreak, I would lay in a supply of vitamin C and the C complex substance called Pycnogenol, not to mention other immune enhancers.
bumping for later
“bumping for later”
Assuming there IS a later...
I'll just bet that, that was a very unpleasant day at work for the principles involved.
“This is clearly an incident that is very discomforting and embarrassing to the University of Texas Medical Center and their national biosecurity lab that they have there,”
THEY are disturbed and embarrassed?
Oh, isn’t that special...
Of course, Al Quaida has no lack of bioweaponeers in its ranks.
Not as plain. But you can bet it’s child’s play to piggyback it on something else. Safe to work with, while you splice it into something waterborne, for example.
I’ve been fearing that Obama was preparing to signal Hamas and Hezbollah sleeper cells to initiate biological attacks. We’ll see what comes of this...
That’s just great. Get on Hwy. 45 in Galveston and head north 100 miles and there I am.”
There are just a whole lot of us stuck in the 100 miles between this lab and you. UTMB was closed for quite a while and they were pretty successful at remaining out of the press limelight after Ike. Nurse I know who worked there pre-Ike said we would be amazed at what all was not found after Ike hit.
Don’t know if you remember the flood of 2001 in the Med Center when we had something like 40 inches of rain with Allison. All kinds of stuff was in the basement of the medical buildings and ended up floating all through the sewer and bayou system.
Pity nobody knows for certain what happened. Does not say good things about control factors on these supposedly controlled items.
Probably just transferred to al Qaeda as part of the
MANPAD and other tech-transfer by Obama/Holder/Clinton.
After all, there's four vials of deadly virus they didn't lose!
Ive been fearing that Obama was preparing to signal Hamas and Hezbollah sleeper cells to initiate biological attacks.
This is what concerns me more than Homeland Security buying bullets. Americans have enough ammo to shoot every HS employee 50,000 times, but Americans don’t have an easy defense against weaponized swine flu or smallpox.
These Nazis in Washington wouldn’t hesitate killing 100 million Americans with biological warfare, IMO. The only viable defense we have against this is the Defense Intelligence Agency which can connect the dots in a biological attack.
I would think that would be one of the wost places to be during a real zombie outbreak. Cast members and crewmen would think it was all fake until it was too late.
It wasn’t lost.
It was stolen.
This is how universities operate..At the pleasure of the government.
Well what’s interesting is this was posted as part of “Front page” news, and one of the nanny moderators didn’t like it so they took it out.
Yet this below remains in Front page section and is accepted...yuk yuk..
“”Hiker and dog save man trapped for days in hole on California mountain””
Never thought of that...I guess a hurricane could blow those deadly cooties all the way up into Oklahoma.
Look, it was just lost, a simple mistake...Haven’t you ever misplaced your car keys or forgot to turn off the sprinklers?
I was afraid that the Hamas and Heabollah operatives that were flown in direct unchecked flights from Iran to Venezuela would have brought biological weapons with them. And they may have. Or the Obama regime may be providing the goods for them...
Can the butterfly drones disperse biological agents?
Ooh. I just noticed again. This is a disease from VENEZUELA. Where the Hamas and Hezbollah operatives were shipped to, from Iran...
The lab is there because of politics and location. The fact that Galveston is a barrier island allows for easy cut-off from the mainland in the event of the release of a deadly biological agent. All that needs to be done is stop the ferries running to Bolivar, close I-45 at the causeway bridge and and the train tracks, and to the west, close San Luis Pass. The only other way off the island is to swim the Gulf. Anybody on the island at the time of such a release will be quarantined until the risk is cleared.
They did have problems with lab security when I was there. I worked in an area where my team and I would need to go into the lab on a regular basis. They also have a large foreign student population which is worrisome. The folks who work on campus found out about this about the same time as the general public did. The folks running the National Lab of course knew because of the inspection.
The stories they are putting out there are ridiculous. Galveston is a port city. If they have Venezuelan ships in in port, they most likely will have Venezuelan rats. Also, what mechanism keeps other rats exposed to the virus from being infected? How can they be sure? The plague was thought at one time to be confined to rats and not transmittable to other species. This whole thing has cover-up written all over it, especially the story that the vial could have stuck to someone's glove and been accidentally disposed of. There will be more coming out of this.
Thanks for posting. I know the exits off the island you are talking about. My husband was a Vice-Pres. of American National Insurance, worked for them 30 years. Yes, that Am. Natl. building is the tall one in Galveston. I was in and around Galveston many years. For a number of months I worked for a doctor at UTMB doing research for a psychological test that was being developed for children with ADD.
I didn't know the building you are talking about would withstand a 5 hurricane. I did know there was flooding in those UTMB buildings from Ike. Perhaps the bldg. you are talking about was somehow built to prevent its flooding.
I was thinking the bldg. could get damaged and have those deadly mixtures in them from a hurricane so it was bad to have them in Galveston. I see where you are coming from to have a strong building and put the deadly stuff on that island so the island could be quarantined.
The article said UTMB people think the vial was thrown away, but you are doubting that. Since you worked there, you should know how possible that is and you don't think it was thrown away. Add to that Galveston is a port city with ships in and out. Bring bad guys in and they get off the ship and they are here.
Well, heck, I was going to stop thinking about that missing vial but, due to you, I can't. I wonder if we would be notified if they did find out it was stolen. I would bet the govn. wouldn't tell us.
“Where the Hamas and Hezbollah operatives were shipped to, from Iran...”
Yeh, okay. Now we’re talking about the asymmetrical warfare group, a wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force. Known as Unit 400, these elite killers are under the command of Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Rumors were rampant that these killers passed through our southern border.
Let me bring in Marcella and texgal to see if they can add anything to our conversation.
Such a friendly place, surely no bad guys around. What I don't know is where these ships come from. Venezuela has come up as a place terrorists went, so I'll do some web research to see if I can find out if ships from Venezuela dock there. Be back in a bit.
We know Iran is close friends with Venezuela and both countries leaders hate us.
If our ports aren't protected any more than our southern border, consider those ports as sieves for anyone wanting to enter.
We know texgal said there are a number of foreign students in UTMB in Galveston and that was a concern. So, we have a missing vial of a dangerous, killing, substance that was in that Galveston lab and now it isn't. WHERE IS IT?
Marcella, thanks for your input.
I’m looking around and seeing patterns that I’m concerned about. Whatever you can contribute is appreciated.
Semper fi, buddy
I wonder if there is a way to find out when and how the University got this vial in the first place.
That is the best compliment you could give me. I have been married to two husbands and both were Marines and both died of cancer, one with kidney cancer and the other of brain cancer. During my first husband's cancer fight, I carried a Marine flag and always put it up in his hospital room every time we had to go to the hospital.
After living with each of them for many years, I know Marine “language”, every filthy, wonderful word they come out with. I'm by myself now, but if an eligible Marine showed up, we would have a good time.
Semper fi, buddy
It’s the “Galveston National Laboratory” so the University of Texas Medical Branch was awarded that by the federal government and they put it on that island away from the mainland. While doing research, I quickly saw a map of the US and where these labs are. Looked like about five of them spread around the US. We know the CDC in Atlanta has one. I think that one is the grand daddy of them all.
Women like you make Marines whole, and God bless every one of you. You hold the line back home and raise our children while we’re away. You welcome us back home regardless of the dirty work we did. You are treasures, all of you.
Thanks for the ping!
They have closed ranks on this and we will probably not get much info from UTMB. Watch for "resignation" announcements and for new hires in that area. The city of Galveston will keep it quiet because bad PR can hurt their tourist season (come on down kiddies and play with the rats that glow in the dark!),
The building, to address the possibility of flooding is elevated several feet, you have to climb stairs to enter the building. If there is a basement I'm sure they learned from the flood at the Med Center in Houston and are not storing experimental items there. I'm not so worried about the workers coming in on the freighters as I am the students and medical personnel from other countries who have badges and can access these labs. Some BSL-1 & 2 labs are housed other places on campus and are less secure.
