Legislative leaders light a fire on taxing Burning Man

Each year, Burning Man draws 60,000 people to the Black Rock Desert north of Reno to participate in a weeklong counterculture art festival.

Admittance to the bohemia isn’t free, though. You need to buy a $380 ticket.

Now, some Democratic legislative leaders are looking at the ticket proceeds and wondering why the state doesn’t get a cut.

“It’s how many people and they pay how much?” Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis, D-Las Vegas, said. “I definitely think we ought to look at that.”

Here’s some quick math: 60,000 tickets sold at $380 a pop equals $22.8 million. Apply the state’s 5 percent live entertainment tax to the proceeds and the state could net $1.14 million from that event.

I’ve read stories about this “shindig”
Conditions seem horrific.
Given the widespread availability of drugs and sex in our current society, I don’t really get the idea of the whole thing....

I dunno. I assume you’re there (you are named “redreno”). How much of a disruption to the community is this burning guy thing? If it costing extra Police and such, they need to pay for that. Or at least hire private dicks.

libtards don’t want the laws they vote for applied to themselves. everyone else is supposed to pay taxes. the state idiots will piss it away of course, but the libtards ought to feel the pain they’ve inflicted on everyone else just the same as we have to.

--exactly--"Burning Man" is self contained out in the desert, causes no known law enforcement problems (attendance is voluntary) so , on the principle that if it moves , tax it--some Demo wants to--

--same principle as Nevada gold mining--somebody can still make money in the Obamanomy so the politicians want it---

"... How much of a disruption to the community is this burning guy thing?"

Disruption? Nothing really.

Clogs up I-80W for a little while when all the 'Burners leave their temporary city of freedom and return to the People's Republic of California.

Sure, they're screwing under the moonlight out in God forsaken nowhere and dropping acid. I personally couldn't care less.

This is how it should be.

But the state is trying to figure out how to fleece them after they’ve been boffin’ under the moon.

Well, the Burning Man people practically asked to have the Democrats all up in their business. Its who they are.

They're headquartered in San Francisco, and various splinter groups within the organization have been threatening to sue the crap out of one another for the last few years ever since Burning Man became what they think is a big deal. Everyone involved wants their taste, and now the Nevada Assembly Democrats want their piece.

The political left in this country can't even organize getting high and showing your tits under the starlight out in God forsaken nowhere without hordes of lawyers, fees, taxes, a Politburo in charge, and event tickets that cost close to $500 admittance. Pretty much everything you'd expect so-called 'liberals' to do if left to their own devices if they were marooned on the surface of Mars.

The attendees themselves are so blessed stupid that they're pretty sure some Republican is behind how litigiously lame the Burning Man event has become, but believe me, everything these dumb bastards have done they've done to themselves.
