I have problems finding some items at Walmart, too.

However, Target it BY FAR worse...especially — but now limited to — sale items.

70-80% of the time even normally stocked items are out of stock!!

The service desk will say they will be coming soon — confirm they are ordered — and then they take forever or they then drop the brand.

This is true in Washington D.C. area and Florida!

The clue is in the article, when it says that the order to,cut hours came from head office. This is is a consequence of Obamacare.

Actually the biggest problem at my local Walmart is too many taking too much time to stock anything. they lean against the shelves or stand there talking to co workers instead of actually doing the job they are being paid for.

As Obamacare kicks in, expect to see fewer employees everywhere, not just Wal-Mart. And the guy who wants to work 40 hours a week can forget it. The few employees who remain will be part-time only.

I remember the first Walmart Superstore opening in this area. Sales associates on roller skates all over the place, getting asked every few minutes if we needed assistance, Made-in-the USA signs hanging from the ceiling.

A friend of mine works there part-time and said employees leave without new employees replacing them, and jobs are nearly at on-call status. Meanwhile, we are told that the economy is improving as one of the most immediately affected points of money transfers indicates the opposite.

No, that's just convenient thinking. Walmart has been way at low hours per week for years. My neighbor works there and they give him sometimes just four hours a day. Price of gas to get to and from work eats 1/3 a days pay on those days.

Walmart - Third world products were just the start. Now offering third world wages too!

Short hours? Transfer to Williston, ND. I have seen empty shelves in that store, too, but it isn’t because they aren’t stocking them as fast as stuff comes in—it is that the merchandise is going out that fast.

I’m calling BS on this. I shop at Walmart several times a week (for the prices!) and the help there is always courteous, and there’s plenty of it. The people at my local Walmart actually seem to like working there.

You can count on at least one negative story about Walmart every week. The Democrat newsrooms got their marching orders on that long ago.

There’s clearly only one thing to do. Fill a couple of those shipping containers with the Chinese preteens who make our favorite products and get ‘em to work stocking shelves, too! Then we can get our basic necessities and go back to watching reality TV.

Well I work at a Walmart (don’t support unionization) but much of what this artical states is true. And it pissed me to all heck when I can’t help customers because they haven’t hired enough. I do my work.

The people who work with me have their own company, usually a one-person LLC. They contract out their services and perform as a subcontractor. It opens up opportunities to shield income from taxation not present to the average employee, and lets them write off more of their operational expenses than they'd be able to write off on a form 2106.

It is a win-win situation, they carry their own professional liability insurance, etc., cover their own worker's comp, (as do I), and get paid better and faster than the average employee because I can pay them better for their services (lower overhead for me). Checks are issued when they hand me the invoice, so they don't even have the pay period lag most employees have.

Don’t know about Costco; but I have seen Target with a pretty low inventory. Kroger Grocery was trying to get away with may still be doing it expired food, etc. There were a lot of people returning stuff everyday for this reason. Krogers also has a very bad deli. There stuff is out of date and their bakery stuff has so much sugar in it; you would be high for days or go into a diabetic coma. I have also seen on Petco’s shelves recalled pet food. They just moved it to another shelve.

You have never obviously worked at a Walmart where thoughtless people let their little kids wet and do do on the floor without cleaning it up. That happens all the time. And they won’t let people in with dogs. :)

A lot of that is not necessarily Wal-mart’s fault. I can speak from experience when I say that kids often don’t want to work at all.

Some years ago, during welfare reform, one of our local supermarket chains decided to do its civic duty and hire a number of former welfare recipients to work as cashiers. Didn't work out too well. Some didn't show up for work, or they were busy gossiping and fooling around when they were supposed to be working.

Eventually, one by one most of those former welfare recipients were let go. The stores replaced them with self-serve checkout stations. The store where I shop has 14 cashier stations. Nine are self-serve and at the most, only two of the remaining stations are manned by warm bodies.

So long as Walmart is paying $9 an hour, and cutting hours to less than 32 so they can avoid providing their rather minimal health insurance to workers, they will have problems now that unemployment is going down.

On the other hand Walmart Real Estate continues with its plan to put small businesses near Walmart out of business so they can capitalize on their real estate business. They really don’t care if the store looses money and fails, the real estate profits is their goal in a number of places, especially a city with a hot market.

Note: The “elected leaders” are no doubt given campaign money to encourage them to favor new Walmart stores.

Son works at Walmart. He hears this come around at the start of every quarter. And he comes home early about once every quarter, 30 min to an hour. Then back to biz as usual. He always gets 40 plus hours.

Other commenters have made good points, to few quality employees.

Also, Walmart has an automated reorder system that gets a bit screwy. It still relies on human maintenance, so staff in stocking shelves will screw it up.

Recently (well since Christmas), a particular item has been out of stock, but show some massive amt on the shelves and in backroom inventory. The inventory staff have tried to fix it, but the “policy” is the system runs itself. I think my son finally convinced someone the system was wrong and he got it ordered, but... 3 months lost sales and possibly customers.

The other day, my mobile phone charger wouldn't charge. I checked and noticed a short due to frayed insulation, which I fixed, enabling one last charge. Then I googled for chargers matching the specs of the broken one. One click on Amazon, and a replacement was on the way. $6.74, no shipping, no tax, thank you very much. Arrived with three bars still showing on the phone's battery indicator.

Can't imagine what the Walmart brick-and-mortar experience would have been like.

Same here. The store shelves are usually well stocked (Except right after the first of the month) and the employees can usually help you find what you need.

Maybe some of them could come and work at my Walmart? At the store I shop at, it isn't unusual to find only two checkout lanes open and full grocery carts lined up a half dozen deep with shoppers spending 45 minutes just waiting in line.

It's gotten to the point where I'm willing to spend a little more money at the grocery store just so I can get out of there.

not too long ago Wal-Mart was supposed to move to a 'just in time' stocking operation where fewer items would be kept in a standard retail store.

Apparently they forgot that if it takes 100 hours to stock a particular type of goods in one session and you chunk that up into 10 pieces, each piece will take 11 hours ~ because every time you need to stock that item you must PREPARE to stock it ~ and that includes having the employee who does that job on the scene, with the truck at the platform, and everybody with a power jack ~ whoops!!! NO POWER JACKS at Wal-Mart ~ so you need to have the BIG GUYS WITH THE MUSCLES on the scene with portable hand jacks all ready to go.

Then there's end of job clean-up.

Not surprising to see that the new system of reduced inventory on hand is leading to shortages. It always does.

Our local Walmart is installing more self-check machines, but the human staffed lines are still clogged. Some of the shoppers will never switch to self-check, and they WILL go elsewhere.

My local walmart chicom distribution center has employees all over the place. They work very hard at not working. Some employees are very hard workers (they also confirm what I say here) but I have seen the slackers work hard at looking like they are working. I am not alone in this observation. walmart... a once great American success story... sucks. At least here it does. Check the dates... many items are already at or past the “sell by date”

You are right on. I told my dh the employee- employer relationship is over. I have set goals for us to be self employeed or for me, subcontracted in two years. I hope we have enough time. I plan on bring the kids into it by four years. Obamacare has ended the security of working for someone else.

Same here. We usually stop at our Walmart once or twice a week. Shelves are stocked, many of the same people have been working there for years. Always courteous help, and the store is always impeccably clean.

Within the last few weeks, they installed a self-checkout area, which is turning out to be very popular.

We’re in rural Western Pa. Don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

Basing statements such as “employees said managers bonuses are based on payrolls” just indicates that this is a bogus story. Employees have no idea what managers bonuses are based on.

It’s not bogus about the empty shelves...but it is about the causes.

Only a fool would cut the product on their shelves in order to cut staff—or fail to stock items that sell to cut staff.

Once a year or so I go into a Wal-Mart looking for an item or two, and they are ALWAYS ‘out of stock’ on that particular item...seems to be plenty of everything else, though...

Many of the stockers also seem to think they are in the store by themselves. Between themselves and their carts, they block the aisles and are very slow to move. They come shooting out of an aisle, nearly running into customers who are moving in the main throughway.

Sheesh.

Items are basically the same price at Target and Walmart but if you use your Target REDcard you get a 5% discount making Target the better deal.

Being a former Walmart employee and current customer (albeit out of necessity since there are no other choices in my rural community), I can honestly say that everything in this story is true. The three stores in my immediate area all have empty shelves and skeleton crews, with most of the cash registers perpetually closed. Bentonville has really shot itself in the foot.

No, Walmart's been doing that for a long time. Like the article says, store managers are rewarded for slashing payroll and hours down to the bare minimum.

Recent funny story about Walmart self checkout. First, I am one that avoids them if I have over 2-3 items. Cannot go through them without “unexpected item in bagging area” repeatedly, etc.

We normally shop about 7-8 am on Sunday mornings. Love it for so many reasons. But a couple of weeks ago, the store we normally go to was trying some new process where they only had self checkout open. After the poor kid had to log into my register way too many times, we slunk out of the store. Needless to say, Sunday had 2 regular checkout lanes open.

The only 40-hour employees at Walmart are the managers. 30 hours and under are the norm for the regular employees, and those who go over their assigned hours (and heaven forbid, earn overtime), are “coached” (i.e. warned) to never do it again under threat of termination.
