What does a pope do? New priorities Break with past The Pope's inbox

Pope Francis has decided to shun a grand papal apartment on the top floor of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace in favour of a modest two-room residence.

His spokesman said he was "trying out this type of simple living" in a communal building with other priests.

In doing so he has broken a tradition which is more than a century old.

The decision reinforces the newly-elected Pope's austere reputation. As archbishop of Buenos Aires he refused to move into the Bishop's Palace.

Preferring more modest accommodation, he also often cooked his own meals. Communal meals

Since the reign of Pope Pius X at the beginning of the 20th Century every pope has occupied the palatial penthouse apartment with more than a dozen rooms, staff quarters, a terrace and extensive views over the city of Rome.

I hope he has quiet neighbors. I hate having to bang on the ceiling when the folks upstairs turn the bass all the way up.

This modesty and vow of poverty stuff could get a guy in trouble with the unionized clergy big-wigs.

I like cooking for myself.

I am just peculiar about the way things should be done.

And I like my modest studio apartment.

Everything I own fits in the trunk of my car.

I can live anywhere in the world with little effort.

I identify with Francis on this.

I would take the apartment next to his, if he will have me.

Maybe they will list it on craigslist.com

I have a feeling that a bunch of high flying and spending Cardinals are probably regret their votes. I don't know what kind of fidicuary role the pope has, but I'd wager budgets are going to be slashed. Good managers tend to expect that of their surbordinates.

Hes a papal extremist, bitterly clinging to outmoded views of poverty and self denial. /s

I love the humility, I really do. But this guy needs to understand he is the Pope. If he is going to do any meaningful reform he will have to command the respect of the Curia. He is on the brink of looking weak.

"If he is going to do any meaningful reform he will have to command the respect of the Curia. He is on the brink of looking weak."

That's interesting because I have exactly the opposite impression.

As if these are volleys shot across the bow with the message being, "Follow my example." or something like that.

He might be a radical sort of leader who isn't afraid of provoking discomfort.

Pope Francis is a single man living alone. Cooking for himself is probably his only hobby. His time belongs to the Church & the world’s Catholics. If he chooses to live simply, the Holy Father is merely living & leading by example.

He can meet prelates and heads of state in the appropriate settings within the Vatican. He will often celebrate Mass amidst the opulence of St. Peter’s. Retreat into his plain apartments at the end of a long day’s duty, in the silence & solitude of the Lord’s beneficence, is blessed relief from his pressing duties as Pope and as Bishop of Rome.
