Effort in Arizona Would Give Residents Free Shotguns
Arizona Daily Star ^ | 27 March, 2013 | Darren DaRonco Darren DaRonco

Tucson residents living in crime-ridden areas could soon receive free shotguns.

Operating on the premise an armed neighborhood is a safer neighborhood, a group led by former mayoral candidate Shaun McClusky is raising money to purchase shotguns and provide training for anyone who lives in a mid- to high-crime neighborhood and can pass a background check.

The project is part of a developing nationwide movement to see if more guns really do translate into less crime.

McClusky said he's bringing the program to Tucson because the City Council has failed to properly fund the Police Department, leaving many residents easy targets for criminals.

"We need to take back our city, and it needs to come back to the citizens and not the criminals," McClusky said. "Right now, the criminal element is winning."

Over the next couple of weeks, McClusky and others will begin spreading leaflets and posting fliers in Midvale Park, Pueblo Gardens and a yet-to-be-determined midtown neighborhood to induce residents to sign up for the program.

McClusky said the shotguns will be single-break-action guns that can hold only one shell. Pump-action shotguns have been considered, but that will depend on cost. For now, each gun will cost $205, which includes a box of ammunition. With the training and background checks included, McClusky estimates it will cost about $350 to $400 per person.

McClusky said his group won't be making the same tactical error as Mark Kelly did recently - buying weapons not for their own use. Instead, they will donate the money for individuals to fill out the background checks and purchase the weapons for themselves.

This sounds like a good way to win Hispanic votes.

Show that you trust them with responsibility.

The crime rate will plummet after the first miscreant breaks into a house and gets blown to Kingdom Come.

I'd like to see this tried in some inner city black 'hood, but as much as liberals love to do harmful social engineering experiments on millions of unwilling participants, they'll never go along with *this* one.

For these miscreants, ‘Kingdom Come’ is better known as Hell.

Will this be: a Biden-endorsed double-barrel sport gun for, “just walk out on the balcony here ... walk out and put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,” or will it be a pump for, “two center-mass blasts”? I’ll take the MUCH lighter pump.

It appears they will start with single shots, but are considering pump guns.

An ASU professor cited in this article said..."There is no credible evidence at all that providing a high-crime area with the instruments to facilitate more crime is going to have any net social benefits,"

Wow. Could his ideological bent have been more obvious? He could not have been more transparent if he had said... "I have ignored all There is no credible evidence at all that more guns equals less crime."

I have a 410 version that I load up with 000 buckshot. Each shell has 5 of these 3/8 lead balls. Sure wouldn’t want to get hit by those things. It’s a hoot to shoot also. Very little recoil.

That’s why I love living here. The town’s not nearly as liberal as its reputation.

Tucson City Council is a bunch of liberal loons that couldn’t even make the second team of politicians in Chicago or Los Angeles. They come here and run for office. We now have bankrupt city golf courses (overstaffed, poorly maintained, under used)a street car line that NO ONE will use with street cars that won’t be delivered for at least another year, The Rio Nuevo Project that is so over spent that it can never in at least a thousand years break even and is NOT wanted by anyone except the insiders who will profit from the vastly overpriced contracts. To say nothing of streets full of pot holes in which you could loose a Volkswagen. Of course they want MORE TAXES to fix these and other shortcomings, all caused by, guess who...themselves.

Yeah but that’s the government. The people are still pretty cool. And remember Tucson passed shall issue CCW before AZ did, so every once in a while our government gets things right.

My wife and I recently spent 40 days living in Tucson while she was a transplant patient at the University of Arizona Medical Center. Our neighborhood was very safe, had fabulous bus service, and shopping was 10 minutes away, either on foot or by bus.

But the driver of the van service that took us to our twice-weekly appointments at UMC had just been robbed at gunpoint, with two guys breaking into his home and putting guns to him, just after the first of the year.

Some neighborhoods in Tucson could use shotguns to stop the crime. Nothing says stop like a bully with a pistol dribbling his intestines all over the sidewalk after being stopped by a shotgun, free or otherwise.

By the way, the police aren't the only inept law enforcement service in the city. The Pima County sheriff is Clarence Dupnik, who has been heavily criticized for his militarization of the sheriff's department.

Actually, I’m sure it would be pretty deadly out to at least 40 yards. Muzzle velocity for those shells is 1100 ft per sec. Better than a lot of pistols.

They should call this, the Joe Biden plan in action in the real world.

Dr John Lott can run the stats re crime rates before the Joe Biden shotguns and afterwards.

Dr John Lott has documented and proved this point with his book, “More Guns, Less Crime”
