COLUMBUS, Ohio - Dozens of Central Ohio residents joined a nationwide effort to call for an end to gun violence across the country.
On a day named a "National Day to Demand Action,” gun safety advocates held events across the country, from Washington D.C. to Columbus.
The group convened in support of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns National Day to Demand Action.
Despite the emotionally charged issue, the people standing their ground said it's about saving lives and keeping guns out of the wrong hands.
“Coaches are required to tell students that they can’t play if they have a concussion. Now, I can’t recall hearing a word about First Amendment rights about this” said Dr. Jonathan Groner of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Groner said like sports safety, gun control isn't a constitutional issue. He said it's a public health issue.
“Let's try to start a new dialogue. Let's try to save some lives today,” said Groner.
As part of a national effort to curb gun violence, dozens gathered in Columbus signing petitions to "demand action."
However, those who oppose tighter gun restrictions say lawmakers should be focusing on access to firearms not guns themselves.
“The same firearms in the hands of a law abiding sportsman is a horror show in the hands of a violent criminal who shouldn’t have them and is not legally entitled to possess them,” said Steve Sanetti of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
But it's on the streets of Columbus, where the fire department's medical director said he's seen enough real-life problems from guns.
“We’ve discovered bullet holes in some of our medic vehicles. So for these reasons, many of our EMS providers on the Columbus division of fire have bullet proof vests, said Dr. David Keseg, the Columbus Division of Fire Medical Director.
Retired Morrow County teacher Jill Grubb wears a backpack to remind others of a little girl she's never met before.
“I cannot believe people think, oh well, there is nothing we can do 03 and how can you let children be murdered and not do something,” said Grubb.
The Mayors Against Illegal Guns was founded in 2006 as a bipartisan coalition of more than 900 mayors representing cities across the country.
Dozens you say? In a nation of 330 million? Well then, the people have spoken, yes?

1-Enforce existing laws, and prosecute accordingly.
2-Encourage citizens to take full spectrum defense training, including arming themselves and being prepared to defend their household.
Brilliant post....should say it all, from handicapped ramps at ever Mf’ing street corner to braille at drive up ATMS to 90 percent of the parking spaces at Walgreens being for handicapped...the majority must give up to the minority....out of guilt. We are suposed to be a country led by the majority, yet the minority lead us by the nose.

Dozens, huh? We had 10,000 in Albany, NY last month fighting for the 2nd Amendment. That is 833 dozen.

i think the braille at the driveup is because it is the same key pad used at a walk up and the manufacturer doesn’t have to make 2 different ones. one thing that really annoys me is having an RTD have special on call bus service for handicaped but that was “insulting” so we tax payers had to put ramps on every frigging bus for the rare times they are actually used.
Gun violence? Don’t blame the weapon, look at the statistics on the people who die by means of firearms. About 20% are suicides (mostly White folks), 75% are Black on Black crime and the last 5% just crazy people acting crazy or darn fools shooting “unloaded” guns. How is universal registration going to change the outcome?

Lets get real, the shootings in Columbus are ALL in the ghettos, which is most if the city now. Actually, Columbus is in training to become little Detroit. Used to be a beautiful city with a thriving, growing downtown area. Low crime, clean, prosperous. Then we got a new mayor who cared more about his brothers and sisters than the city. The city is filthy, litter is everywhere, buildings are trashed, crimes rampant, murder a day, shopping malls have closed because of crime and gang murders. BUT Martin Luther King Drive sparkles.

Because, we already have over 20,000 gun laws on the books and every one of them has failed to stop CRIMINALS determined to use ANY means necessary to commit crimes.
The facts continue to prove that when everyone is armed, the crime rate plummets to nearly zero.
Soooo...they’re going to rid their city of Lefties, since it seems THEY are the ones doing most of the shooting.

Dozens of anti-gun people showed up in Columbus Ohio? LOL. Thousands of pro-gun people attended the last Gun show I went to in Toledo Ohio. These witches need dunked.

Here’s a start:
Stop with the wussified “racial profiling” and start stopping and searching tatted up gang members and you will get a lot of bad guys with guns off of the streets.
I remember in the early 1970’s in San Francisco during the “Zebra Killings” when Black Muslims were gunning down White people at random.
I guy I played HS Football with (Terry White) was shot one night at a Bus Stop but survived.
SFPD, under then Mayor Joe Alioto directed his officers to lean hard on Black Males to find the culprits as people were dying on the streets and tourism and nitelife had slowed dramatically.
SFPD leaned hard on Black Males - stopped them, searched them, arrested them for minor warrants or for even having a Marijuana seed on them in order to clear them and to make life hard on them as long as Blacks were going around shooting White people with the hopes that the pressure on the Black community would lead to someone that knew something and would talk to take the heat off of Black Males.
Eventually the NAACP and the ACLU had the “profiling” stopped, but someone wanting the reward money that had inside info flipped and turned in the culprits. A group of Black Muslims.
I had a radio with a police band and was listening one night when several shootings went down. It was crazy.
Eventually, the SFPD switched to a closed police radio band that had the designation “Z” and by coincidence, the crimes were Black on White. The same colors of the Zebra.
16 people were killed in arguably the largest hate crime in modern US history, but very few people even know about it.
Several others were wounded, including my HS Football teammate who was one of many that testified in the trial that led to the conviction of several Black men that went to prison for life.
