(CBS News) ARLINGTON, Va. - Many of us can remember the image of President Kennedy's casket being carried to Arlington National Cemetery on a horse-drawn caisson 50 years ago this year. What you may not know is a similar honor is given every day to a select few military veterans in one of the most moving ceremonies we've ever seen.

It is a scene that has been repeated nearly 1,500 times a year since 1948.

Seven highly trained horses carry the remains of American heroes to their final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery.

This is the least we can do for those who served have this country. I have witnessed it only once in all my PGR rides and that was at a very high profile funeral here in San Diego for a true American patriot.

I've been to two at Arlington, both family. Nothing, nothing is more moving, except maybe the Wall [especially if you have a loved one on it] and the Tomb of the Unknown.

Buried my father and mother at Arlington within a five month span last year. I am grateful for the full military honors rendered to my father and the side bearers for my mother. Both were moving ceremonies.

God bless them , and you.

In a few days, I’ll be at Arlington, showing my grand daughter the Cemetery and the family graves. I think we can still get in to the stables at Ft. Myers. She’ll love that.

While the article does not state it, I believe the horses are Percherons.

I have participated in hundreds of funerals at Arlington, including J.F.K.s.

All branches have funerals there for vets, non war vets, active duty and dependents.

And politicians.
