WASHINGTON - One of the House of Representatives longest-serving Republicans now says he meant no disrespect when he used the term wetbacks to describe migrant workers his family once employed. His comment, which drew a strong rebuke from the House speaker, flies in the face of his partys effort to improve outreach to minority groups.

The government’s crackdown on illegal immigration during Pres. Eisenhower’s administration was called “Operation Wetback.”
Can’t call them “wetbacks”
But Oakies, Honkies, hunkies, rednecks and wops is ok.
Until I saw that his dad was in California, I was impressed that folks would swim the Beeing strait for work in Alaska.
But then he has to grovel and say he’s ‘sorry.’
They are, indeed, wetbacks, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.
Right. And the government got rid of every known alien and shipped them back over the border.
Easy there cracker....
Perhaps we should boycott ‘Mexican’ restaurants. If no gringo is eating their tacos they might have to retreat back over the border unless the Mexican government has erected a fence.
What we get in the US are the dregs of Mexican and South American ‘society’.
Would be one way of detecting illegals without racial profiling. Check for a nut sack. If they got one, they didn't make the swim, at least not in the last day or so!

Yeah, but then you’d have to get the TSA involved. I don’t think anyone else is allowed to do that kind of check.
“Wetbacks” is not a slur. It’s just a descriptive term for those who came here illegally by swimming the Rio Grande. Most “Mexican-Americans” (a real slur against those who consider themselves unhypenated Americans) probably view the term as a compliment to the dedication of those who had the courage to “take the plunge.”

On the Wikipedia page, it is only a slur in English, not Spanish. I am NOT kidding.
I prefer “crimalien” for those who came here illegally.
Yes, Los Mojados (the Wet Ones) are held in high esteem by Mexican nationals. So, the next time you encounter a group of young people who appear to have Mexican ancestry, tip your hat to them and to their heritage by asking them if they are genuine wetbacks.
You forgot cracker.
I especially loved Algore the Donkey. And Bea Arthur — the scariest bee in the hive.
but of course “Uncle Tom” is not a slur at all
You know who always had a very contentious relationship with Don Young when she was governor?
I have known Don Young since the 70s and he has always been a blunt talker. He is, after all, a frontiersman. Born and raised in California, he migrated to Alaska, married an Alaska Indian woman, hunted, fished and trapped. He has served in congress longer than most and I have enjoyed a lot of time with him in the field and on the water.
Being of a certain age myself I recall the thirteen months I lived in California during the early 60s and the fields around Oxnard and Ventura were loaded with “wetbacks” as they were commonly called then. So were the bars, where many of them were maimed with machetes and knives. It was not a pretty life, but better than the ones they left behind every year.
This country has not always been Politically correct, although that itself is not correct. Politically stupid is more accurate.
LOL! Oh man... I’ve got a little shrine to the Wet Ones on the shelf over the toilet.
The bigger slur is referring to wetback/illegal aliens as “immigrants”
I used to live in San Marcos, CA.
In the “little Tijuana” part of town there was (still is?) a convenience store named...
Really! I laughed at that every time I passed it. The mural on the side of the store was of a pompadoured Mexican man up to his chest in the Rio Grande.
I loved it.
What happened to this Country?
Taking a wild guess here but....
Barak Milhouse Obama.
Regarding the use of wetback, can anyone also remember Gringo?
Back during the dust storm of the 30’s many people in Oklahoma left their farms which had dried up (Real Global Warming) and went to California mainly to seek jobs. They got nicknamed Oakies. It wasn’t a term the Californians used with respect.
You forgot “teabaggers”.
And Proud of it.
In Alaska, wouldn’t they be “icebacks”?
The Obama administration has engineered hundreds of murders of illegal aliens, Mexican citizens, and Americans, both in the US, and in Mexico, and in Benghazi, while simultaneously encouraging the overthrow of allies and destroying the US economy — BUT OUR TOP STORY...
Partisan Media Shills ping.
He is RINO scum, this is a great excuse to force him to retire.
