Alaska Rep. Don Young rebuked over slur

WASHINGTON - One of the House of Representatives’ longest-serving Republicans now says he meant “no disrespect” when he used the term “wetbacks” to describe migrant workers his family once employed. His comment, which drew a strong rebuke from the House speaker, flies in the face of his party’s effort to improve outreach to minority groups.

You know who always had a very contentious relationship with Don Young when she was governor?

I have known Don Young since the 70s and he has always been a blunt talker. He is, after all, a frontiersman. Born and raised in California, he migrated to Alaska, married an Alaska Indian woman, hunted, fished and trapped. He has served in congress longer than most and I have enjoyed a lot of time with him in the field and on the water.

Being of a certain age myself I recall the thirteen months I lived in California during the early 60s and the fields around Oxnard and Ventura were loaded with “wetbacks” as they were commonly called then. So were the bars, where many of them were maimed with machetes and knives. It was not a pretty life, but better than the ones they left behind every year.

This country has not always been Politically correct, although that itself is not correct. Politically stupid is more accurate.

So, the next time you encounter a group of young people who appear to have Mexican ancestry, tip your hat to them and to their heritage by asking them if they are genuine wetbacks.

Think about, man. What if they don't know what you know, and some respectable guy choggies on by a gang of gangi-smokin' cholos who dropped out of school at the point they were only taught by Democrat, union teachers. Those cholos will have your chorizo y cojones in hand before you can say, "Hey, Mexican Nationals respect los mojados."

Really! I laughed at that every time I passed it. The mural on the side of the store was of a pompadoured Mexican man up to his chest in the Rio Grande.

Back during the dust storm of the 30’s many people in Oklahoma left their farms which had dried up (Real Global Warming) and went to California mainly to seek jobs. They got nicknamed Oakies.It wasn’t a term the Californians used with respect.
