DENVER (CBS4)- President Barack Obama is traveling to Colorado next week to discuss the states new gun control laws with law enforcement and community leaders.
The president met with relatives of victims of gun violence in Washington, DC on Thursday. Hes pushing for legislation that would expand background checks nationwide in hopes of avoiding another tragedy like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary in December of last year.
We need everybody to remember how we felt 100 days ago and make sure what we said at that time isnt just a bunch of platitudes, said Obama.
The event was part of a National Day to Demand Action. Gun control advocates rallied behind the presidents call.
Gun violence menaces all communities in Colorado and across the country. Whether urban, suburban or rural. And we need to do something about it, said Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan.
Those who oppose tighter restrictions are also making their voices heard.
Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith said he wont enforce federal gun laws he believes are unconstitutional.
I hope this is a turning point that the president isnt out here on a campaign visit. Dont come and preach to us. We dont need that. We know our communities, said Smith.
Obama is scheduled to come Wednesday. The White House says the president will meet with law enforcement and community leaders to discuss the gun control package signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper.
Colorado has gone farther than any state outside the northeast in passing new gun laws. The state now prohibits the sale of magazines that hold more than 15 bullets and requires background checks for all private gun sales. Democrats passed the laws over strong Republican objections. Democrats said they were reacting to massacres at an Aurora movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school. Obama has been unable to get similar measures through Congress.
The latest CBS News poll shows American support for stricter gun laws has fallen since the Sandy Hook shooting from 57 to 47 percent.
I know how I felt when you jumped on national TV to demagogue gun control before the ME had even been allowed to do into the school. Take your Kenyan Killer Klown act somewhere else.
I doubt he would come to say, Texas or Oklahoma, to spew his views.......
He’s preaching to the choir in most of Colorado.
I looked up the numbers today...
I was thinking so long as my car is parked in the garage, it isn’t killing me or anyone else on the road. As long as my legally owned gun is here inside my house, it isn’t killing me or anyone else. If I drive on Los Angeles freeways, I am in danger and I endanger other people, just by driving a car there, while my gun is still inside my house. I do not see how my GUN is so dangerous! I think cars are a much greater danger to people in America.
About 3,000 babies are killed every day in the US by abortion = 360,000 babies die annually in US due to abortion
Over 98,000 people die annually in US due to Avoidable Medical Errors
Over 40,000 people killed in car accidents annually in US (probably MOST of those on L A freeways)
Around 30,000 die annually due to gun shot
The hell he is.
Gun control backlash in CO.
Historically, any citizen would be allowed to speak if they arrived at the Capitol early and signed up on testimony records. Although sign up sheets were in place and citizens including myself signed up, we were completely disregarded. Minutes after I signed up to testify, I learned a different process would be utilized and testimony was based on three categories: experts, preferred witnesses, and public witnesses. No explanation was provided to define expert or preferred witness. I was told this decision was made by the senate president and the chairperson of the hearing committee. Additionally, experts would have no time constraints and all others would be restricted to three minutes.
As I made my way out of the Capitol, I was shocked at the number of people who attended these hearings. It's estimated the number of people in attendance reached 1,000. I spoke to several and was told they just wanted their voice to be heard.
I am not sharing this because of the outcome of the hearings that day; rather I am sharing this because of the process implemented and the faces of all those citizens that were never permitted to participate in the process. Government is supposed to be by the people, for the people and on this day, they were crushed and kicked to the side. Special interest coalitions and hand picked experts with no relevant expertise trumped our citizens.

I know how I felt on Sept 11, 2012 when I knew you let people die because you were just to busy.
I know how I feel that you do not care diddly squat about the 100s of black kids are killed by illegal guns, yet it wasn’t until some white kids were killed you seemed to care.
Who are you directing that at?

Who was too busy and doing what?
Blacks don’t care blacks kill each other so why should anyone else?
You sound like a kooky conspiracy theorist.
OK. Dittos! ;-)
“Hes pushing for legislation that would expand background checks nationwide in hopes of avoiding another tragedy like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary in December of last year.”
so a background check would’ve prevented the massacre at Sandy Hook?? the obama stenographers at the AP are doing all they can to push obama’s lies....

President You Didn't Build That is preaching to the choir in Denver, which wants to be the San Francsico of the Rocky Mountains, but not Colorado.
Always the electoral college swing states. Just sayin
You have no right to complain about obama.
Your stealth support for him during the election via your tiresome ‘anybody but Romney’ mantra will not be forgotten soon.
Thank you TigersEye

The only way all these insane laws can protect us is if we stacked them in front of us as a shield. Folks, we’re getting screwed by both parties.
Pump diesel in his tank.
And you have revery right to be a non-reasoned ignorant jack ass.
Indeed we are! The economy is a mess. The Mid-East is in crisis. North Korea and China are constantly saber rattling while our military atrophies yet all either party can seem to talk about is guns and gays. Oh, and how to open our borders to all who want to come in.
Screw Buckwheat. Organize 100,000 conservatives, libertarians and patriots to let that fascist scum pig know that he’s not welcome in the great state of Colorado.
The ball is in your court, patriots. Take back your state from the democrat Nazis.
I am only seeing through a 101 eye (50.5 proof)r ight now but even I can see the royal shafting that it happining as we are getting behind this shield right now!!! I am bl ind and am going off line; see ya.
You nailed it, Doug!
My county voted 75% for mittens. I can go weeks, sometimes months, without having to speak to a lib - and I have a retail business. I know Texans who moved back to Texas because this area is too conservative.
What's it like in your neighborhood? Take a look at Austin and some of your own rat conclaves and clean them up before you start throwing stones.
Colorado just like California has liberal enclaves, who seem to dominate the politics, most of the people I know who are leaving California are because they feel helpless to over come the liberalism but everyday life is pretty normal.
I have a daughter in Colorado Springs, one in Centennial/Highlands Ranch area, then a grown grandson in Larkspur all those areas seem to be normal (as in not liberal).
I do not live in Austin.
Not a problem. As if any other part of the country isn’t close to that fifty percent line on one side or the other.
Maybe we can get the population of CO back to ‘50s levels of about 1.5 million. It doesn’t break my heart that anyone wants to leave.
The Hell he is, +1. This is not New Jersey, which will become very evident in 2014.
