and yet many community colleges are curtailing or eliminating career-related courses (in fields where people can go out and earn livings) ... and instead the colleges are trying to send more and more students on to BA degrees (mostly in subjects having little or no career value).

This is explained by “the new pressure from Washington” — that is, the Obama “education” policies.

Expect even more growth in the welfare queue as these young people graduate....

I have both a BA and CDL. Guess which one provides me with a better living?

The author is either a liar, fool or both. The only reason that young people cannot find jobs is government interference in the markets.

Education is part of the free market.

Part of the reason these kids remain jobless is because they enroll in majors like Philosophy, French Literature, or Gender Studies, peppered with BS electives. There should be no surprise they’re still living with Mom and Pop and collecting carts at the local supermarket for minimum wage, while not being taken seriously by any professional HR recruiter.

A.head?

Evidently manufacturing a generation of Useful Idiots who cheated/staggered their way through bidness school whilst decorating the internet with pornographic imagery of their frat-punk brethren and soro-sisters did not much of a future make.

Frankly because the factory was sent elsewhere.

We need to stop exporting jobs, and bring them back.

Now.

The Department of Labor estimates that some three million Americans with Bachelor degrees in ridiculous "majors" work in jobs that don’t require an education at all...

Fixed it.

They're doing it because of demand. People can't afford to pay for a four year degree but still want one, so they're going to CC for two years, transferring credits and then getting a four year university degree.

First “kids” do not have BA/BS, men and women do.
The “kid” word really needs to stop.
You are not a kid at 25.

And we should drop the fantasy that the only worthwhile job is a tech job. Blue collar jobs should be something to be proud of.

Exactly. My degree is ‘worth less’ than my hands-on military training. Employers have always been amazed at the amount of work I can get done in a day, my organizational and leadership skills, I’m on time, dependable, etc.

In one case it hurt me getting a job I really wanted; the woman hiring me knew I would replace her in about 2 weeks time, LOL!

But, things work out as they should and I am in a great place in my work life right now. Thanks, Uncle Sam!

Frankly because the factory was sent elsewhere.

Desk jobs sitting at a computer have also been sent abroad (with the finished results smuggled into the country with no import duty paid). Whether it is graphic design (laying out ad circulars for the weekly grocery store ads, simple legal document preparation, or quality assurance testing of software and development of programming code and webpages).

Bill Gates and his ilk sold us out, yet they now proclaim that WE don't pay enough in taxes. Funny that.

Compared to today's standards of "college" behavior, published on the Internet for all to see no less, the Animal House occupants were running a Trappist monastery.

Ain't that the truth! I like my job, but instead of winding things down at 65, I figure I have to keep going just to stand still, financially. Bop 'til you drop!

"A" people hire "A" people. "B" people hire "C"'s and "D"'s.
