West embargoes arms to Syrian rebels over their resale to al Qaeda
Debka File ^ | March 30th, 2013

Posted on 03/30/2013 8:51:02 PM PDT by Mount Athos

The Western arms pipeline to the Syrian rebels fighting Bashar Assad is starting to run dry since the discovery that some of the weapons are being resold and used by al Qaeda in its conquest of southern Syrian and takeover of positions on the Jordanian and Israel borders.

French President Francois Hollande for this reason reversed his government’s policy. “We will not do it [send the Syrian rebel arms] as long as we cannot be certain that there is complete control of the situation by the opposition,” he said Friday, March 29.

That day too, Ankara announced that Turkish authorities had impounded 5,000 shotguns, rifles, starting pistols, gunstocks and 10,000 cartridges in the village of Akcakale before they were sent across into Syria.

debkafile’s military sources: These steps are effectively putting in place a Western embargo on arms supplies to the Syrian rebels and not only the Assad regime. Saudi Arabia and Qatar remain their only sources of weapons.

This follows information reaching Washington, Paris, Ankara and Jerusalem in recent weeks that parts of the weapons consignments destined for the Syrian rebels, especially the Free Syrian Army, are being resold to Jabhat al-Nusra, the Islamist militia which this week proclaimed itself al Qaeda of Syria amid a major offensive for the occupation of southern Syria.

The aggressive Al Qaeda push has in fact swept beyond the important plans finalized last week for a US-led campaign to combat the Syrian chemical weapons threat. Two weeks ago, high-resolution maps were spread out in Jerusalem, Ankara and Amman, marking out zones inside Syria for their armies’ operations under the joint command centers the US set up last year in the three countries for combating chemical warfare.

Those plans and centers switched over last week to operational mode. Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu made an unconvincing attempt to separate the Turkish-Israeli reconciliation from the Syrian issue. However, the fact remains that it was Barack Obama, during his trip to the region on March 20-22, who brought Turkey together with Israel and Jordan for the first joint operation in history on the soil of an Arab nation under US command.

This week, the region finds itself caught up by a menace more immediate even than a chemical war:

Scarcely noticed by the world and Israeli media (busy celebrating the Passover festival), Jabhat al Nusra is about to overrun southern Syria.

Using Western- and Arab-supplied arms smuggled in for the Syrian rebels from Turkey and Lebanon, the jihadists are taking up positions on the Israeli and Jordanian borders while also assuming control over the Yarmouk River and its tributaries. Water in the Middle East has caused the outbreak of more than one armed conflict. And indeed 50 years ago, Israel and Syria fought a war, including aerial dogfights, to dominate that same Yarmouk River. The dispute was finally resolved when the United States stepped in and brokered an agreement for the distribution of its waters among Syria, Israel and Jordan.

Alarm over Nusra Front territorial gains has accordingly taken precedence over the chemical threat in the deliberations of the joint US-Israeli, US-Jordanian and US-Turkish command centers.

Al Qaeda’s Syrian wing has even been able to obtain from Iraqi jihadists its own stock of primitive chemicals - but weapons nonetheless.

The West hesitated too long before cutting off the supply of arms to the Syria rebels; it is already too late to prevent al Qaeda occupying international border regions and seizing control of an important regional water source. Dislodging them would call for a military offensive proper - which seems to be the rationale for the large military field hospital Israeli set up this week on its Golan border with Syria.

No good guys here.

It’s sort of like the Libya situation. The rebels are no better than the government forces.

It’s unlike Egypt where the government of Mubarak, no matter how repressive, was better than than current one run by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Why is this a surprise after events like the Fast and the Furious and the Benghazi murders? If anyone else has noticed, the common item in all these events is OBAMA!!!

I shudder to think of the finely nuanced response to this question that will issue from Faggy Bottom under the valiant leadership of John Merde Pour Des Cerveaux Kerry!

Do I need a sarc tag? I think not!

Where are the survivors of the massacre at Benghazi? The silence of the Obama Regime on this question is deafening!

I suspect that Ambassador Stevens had discovered that Holder and Obama had a fast and furious gun trade racket going with some entity.

Thus, the entire Benghazi operation had to be destroyed or silenced, until after the Election.

Then the Obamanation Liberal Media could work their magic on the gullible Obamanation zombies.

Time to Impeach Obama “so we can find out what” he did.

It seems certain that the Benghazi affair probably did involve gunrunning -- probably to the Syrian rebels.

But, let's face it, that would not have been a big deal. we were already publicly supporting the Syrian rebels, giving them money -- so they could buy weapons.zx

And, had it become known we were actually running guns to the rebels without Congressional approval, the Reagan and Iran-Contra defense would've been mounted immediately.

In the end, there would not have been a meaningful political price to be paid.

That's why I believe there was something else going on. Something far more sinister and inimical to American interests. Something that would have exacted a high political price.

The fact that even now, nobody is talking about it, there aren't even any rumors circulating, tells us that the lid is on tight. The rescued are still being held incommunicado...and nobody knows where they are or even who they are. Something so terrible was going on that the administration doesn't want anybody to know about it.

Whatever it was, Benghazi was said to be "Brennan's Show", so he was probably behind it.

But that's where my speculation ends...

okie01 ~: “So, Amb. Chris Stevens died running guns to al-Qaeda. “

Was there any question why all this information had to remain quiet until AFTER the election ?
We knew days after the Benghazi attack ( that wasn’t being called an attack)
That the mainstream media remained quiet about the attack,
and remain complicit by their continued silence..
and contiue to remain silent about the other +30 Benghazi survivors
And that the administration and the Sect. of State continue to hide the identities and locations of these survivors.

Note - 21,000 MANPADS were loosed onto the world blackmarket when Khaddafi fell.

Reagan gave him a good reason to fear US aircraft, right? So he had TONS of them.

TWENTY ONE THOUSAND.

How about supplying chemical weapons to the rebels so they could mount false flag attacks and blame them on Assad? (Just more speculation on my part)

So, Amb. Chris Stevens died running guns to al-Qaeda.

It might have been when they decided to cut Al Qeada off. At the time, they were supposed to choose between two different Islamic groups within the coalition, if memory serves me right.

At any rate, hard to imagine Obama supporting Al Qeada for awhile in Syria after Obama had the leader of Al Qeada killed. What a strange planet this has become.

You are, of course, correct. Nothing as simple to explain as arms to ‘freedom fighters’ would trigger and political problems the MSN could not explain away.

As far as I can see in the murky muslim world, Stevens et al were nothing more than a gesture of good will and future intentions toward muslims, and especially toward Iran's Supreme Leader. That being true would explain why the cover up of the cover up does not make sense, and why every one is either disseminating or hiding.

Looking at the headline only for beginning read and disagreement with headline has begun for it is too late to embargo arms to al Qaeda when having given al Qaeda an entire country (Libya) full of arms. I see the source. One thing is clear; Libya was full of many types of arms, including chemical and biological weapons. The West (we) handed over those arms via our leaders.
