Lazy postal worker burns, buries undelivered mail
BELFAIR, WA (KOMO/CNN) - A disgraced mailman is in trouble again after admitting to burying thousands of pieces of mail in his backyard.
Postal investigators state mailman Richard Farrell is accused of using a backhoe and burying the undelivered mail in a deep trench.
"Just because I was lazy, and I became a not very good employee," said Farrell. "I just wanted to get out of their as soon as possible."
According to court documents, in 2010, fellow coworkers discovered Farrell dumping mail in a recycling bin.
Those actions prompted investigators to follow him on a route. Investigators discovered that rather than delivering the mail, Farrell spent his shift at a bar before taking the mail home and burning it in a fire pit.
"I began drinking and everything else," said Farrell. "I became non-complacent and I just didn't really care anymore."
A search of Farrell's residence found nearly 8,000 pieces of mail in during that investigation. He was fined and sentenced to 120 hours of community service and three years probation.
A few weeks ago, Farrell found thousands more pieces of mail that were missed in the initial investigation in his storage shed. Instead of turning it in, he burned it.

What did you expect from the USPS and any of our institutions run by the feds? Billions of dollars in debt and mismanaged horribly. Why should this example of incompetence be any surprise to anyone? We don’t exactly have rocket scientists running that operation.

Examples like this guy are all too common.
I never use the USPS for any mail that simply has to be delivered. NEVER.
UPS, Fed-Ex for letters and other documents of value. Never the USPA.
And given someone, somewhere in the USPS is defacing my National Review Mag (and a few years ago my American Spectator), to heck with the lot of them.
Oh, I did complain to the USPS, was told “we'll investigate and get back to you” . . . and years later. . .asked about the status of the complaint and was told to re-file it.
I called NR and they told me what I experience is not uncommon.
Shock, I know, to find out the unionized lazy Holder's People at the USPS would not deliver mail, destroy it and deface it. . .and demand a raise and Saturday's off!
My mother went to the local post office and did the velvet hammer routine. She politely and at length recounted to a manager at the front counter the lapses that had occurred with the new mailman. She then handed over a clear plastic bag containing some of our mailman's discarded liquor bottles for use in counseling their employee.
My mother also sweetly explained that if the problem was not soon solved, to make sure they had the backing of the people above them, she would go to the big post office downtown and talk to the area postmaster and give him more of our new mailman's empty liquor bottles. This prompted a call for the senior manager to come and hear the story, which resulted in promises that the problem would be promptly taken care of.
A few days later, our old postman was back and made a point of ringing the bell at my folk's house. He told my mother that there would be no more mail problems. He also thanked her for getting his old route assignment back, which had been taken from him as part of an affirmative action shuffle. Later, my mother was told that without a route and assigned to closely supervised mail sorting and the like, the problem mailman soon quit.
This is very true. 90% of what I receive from the Post Ofice is junk mail. The one thing I would like to receive, a $100 rebate that I am owed from S&W, has failed to show up yet. My carrier was probably at the pub the day it showed up.
My mail carrier once left me a note saying he wouldn’t deliver my mail unless my sidewalk was shoveled to his satisfaction.
I redid my walk and then left a note in my mailbox saying I wouldn’t pay his salary unless my mail was delivered to my satisfaction.
Never heard another word.
For whatever reason, II read something about 25 years ago that said letter carriers were just about the most content workers in the world. My brother and his wife both worked for the Post Office in inside jobs, and they hated it.

I kind of think those rebates are ‘timed’ to sort of bypass the return date so the ‘smarter’ among us don’t buy the product, get the rebate, then return the product.
Normally by the time the rebate arrives, I forget what it was for ...(of course 1939 may have something to do with that)....<:

I haven’t seen anything that says he was fired, but I did find that he is a “contract mail carrier”.....making it unlikely that he’s a union member.
I think he meant “non-compliant,’ but could be either, I sppose. The spelling/vocab are off.

As a cop in 1976 I arrested a guy for stealing his wife’s alimony check out of her mailbox (which was always replaced by whoever he sent it to, first)and the poor bastid got seven years in Federal Prison. (I doubt he did it all). But a Postal Union member got 120 hours of ‘community service’? WHAT the Hell is wrong with this country? He should have spent a year in jail for EACH piece of mail he destroyed and TWO for the junk mail pieces. I should have let the dumb ass I caught off with a wrist slap and said “Some day the UPS is gonna go broke, ya know.”
Wait till the bureaucrats get their hands on our healthcare. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Each piece of undelivered mail should constitute a separate charge. The guy ought to be in jail!
His people on the route should give him a party. Thank you for not delivering all the junk we get in the mail. I think he did more good than bad. /sarc (sorta).
