Posted on 03/31/2013 9:19:54 AM PDT by lowbridge
New Yorkers have long retired to the warmth and ease of the Florida coast, but eyebrow-raising numbers show that in recent years, most of those moving from the Empire State to the Sunshine State have been going there to find work.
Florida remains the top destination for outbound New Yorkers, but the new migrants are a lot younger than youd expect.
According to the five-year American Community Survey, which the U.S. Census conducted from 2007 to 2011, 78% of the people who migrated from New York to Florida in those years were under age 60. The ages with the highest proportions of migrants to Florida were 18, 19, 21, 24, 28, 40 and 55.
Even leaving out the 18- and 19-year olds, many of whom are probably college students, thats a lot of early retirees, and an astonishing number of young workers.
Even the numbers of New Yorkers moving to Florida in their late 30s and mid 40s arent much lower than the number of retirees moving at the end of their careers.
This means that an increasing number of New Yorkers either cant afford to remain in their home state or cant find work there and are thus moving to states with friendlier business climates to find it.

Let’s hope they don’t take the Nu Yawk culture and mindset with them.
Besides work, the younger folks probably want to move somewhere that they can safely drink Big Gulps and eat Doritos without being harassed.
Welcome to Florida. But please leave your tired, failed, progressive impulses, entitlement mentality and union thuggery in the Evil Empire State.
They can't and won't. And that's why Florida is such a political mess and turning increasingly to the left.
Every other car on I-85S in NC is NY, NJ, VA or MD. Thats fine, just leave your moronic lib crap that your running from at home.
Mental Illness is NOT welcome here.
I’m leaving for Spring Hill, Fla. in a week from today. I was kidding with the Capt. of my charter and asked “Ya’ll ain’t gonna call me a damn Yankee are you?” He said “You gonna go back, or stay?” I said I was gonna go back and he said “We’ll just call you a Yankee.” I told him I’m from the middle of PA and probably to the right of Atilla the Hun. He said I “jes’ GOTTA meet you!” I told him to round up the Goliath Groupers, I’ll be there.
I used to live in Florida. We didn’t like New Yorkers then and I doubt they’ve gotten any better in the interim.
If and when this tax paying, hardworking, liberal hating, freedom loving “New Yorker” is finally left with no choice but to give in to the socialists and leave, the last place I would consider is that shit hole called Florida.
You know those lights were bright on Broadway-
But that was so many years ago...
Before we all lived here in Florida-
Before the Mafia took over Mexico.
There are not many who remember-
They say a handful still survive...
To tell the world about...
The way the lights went out,
And keep the memory alive...

They are all over the Carolina’s.
My cousin moved to Florida, had two kids and died at age 38, in 1985. One of the kids is a “photojournalist” with a Florida daily and a wicked lib. The cousin himself was pretty apolitical, the kid contracted there, though his aunt, the cousin’s sister lives on the Upper West Side. By choice.
Florida is doomed.
That is all.
Their first act on arriving in Florida is to register as democrats and start telling people who have been here for hundreds of years how things should be done.
NYC should have been quarantined 100 years ago, before it could spread it's infection to everywhere else.
You’re joking right?
It’s like a cancer metastasizing.....
These data are telling: the NY (and New England) locusts are invading and “transforming” the Sunshine State. What’s the over/under in years before Florida institutes an income tax?
They do and they are RUDE and obnoxious and demanding, just like back home huh?!
This is why I didn’t move back to my home state upon husband’s retirement from the Navy back in ‘00, TOO MANY DAMN YANKEES
“Lets hope they dont take the Nu Yawk culture and mindset with them.”
No hope necessary, they did it decades ago. And many of them decided to come here to California to crap in our nest instead!
“NYC should have been quarantined 100 years ago, before it could spread it’s infection to everywhere else. “
Not just New York, but all of “New England.” Everyone talks about cutting California loose. How about starting in the middle of Virginia and cutting everything northeast of there loose first! This is where the country’s “Infection” started.
“They do and they are RUDE and obnoxious and demanding, just like back home huh?!”
Just like the Asians, Middle Eastern Turds, Indians, etc. here in Northern California. You have to get real “aggressive” at the local Costco or they will run you down with their shopping cart while they pretend that the don’t see you. Especially the men, who think all women, and most especially white women, are trash to be abused as they see fit. We have already let too much $h!t into our country. It’s long past time to “take out the trash.”
You hit the nail on the head !! Come to Florida, just DO NOT turn it into NY. You left NY for a reason, FL is NOT NY. Leave the wacko liberal left crap up North !
A New Yorker calling Florida a shithole.
Now THAT is rich. Thanks for the laugh!
And every third yankee emigre and other importees (including illegals) is on the federal TEAT. It may be 2 out of every 3. And the local pols? Ticket takers for the machine, and chicken sh$te in the LAW. They think it is the new Californication. The filter should be-— willing to work, business owner/employers, and climate of business friendly. Help the homeless... right... snowbird bums on bicycles rewarded by 501c3 “non profit” orgs with six figure feel good demo/lib “executives”. A joke, in short. And zero advantage to a real broader tax base from this crowd of “what?”. That and Mickey Mouse toot execs and their gay lobby. One more cycle of this, yet again. At least this time, maybe Cuba will open up... but they won’t be taking any of “us”.
Are you kidding? They already have. Some of the biggest liberal and most stealthy RINOs in the country are here in FL.
Welcome to the neighborhood! The west coast of Florida is still somewhat conservative. Just stay away from St. Pete and Tampa.
‘Lets hope they dont take the Nu Yawk culture and mindset with them.’
I know from experience, it NEVER leaves them.
That's also where the American Revolution started. Hopefully, enough libtards will leave NY/New England and the remaining consrvatives can recapture the terroritory.
Saw a bumper sticker on a pick up truck, down here in NC. It read ‘Happiness is a north bound Yankee’.
Oh, poop. Hernando beach is about (50?)Miles from Tampa. I always take two days from here and stop wherever I feel it’s cool. When I walk in for a hamburger and a beer, I tell the bartender “give ALL these drinkin’ people a drink.” I have had such great times doing that and two free fishing trips. This new Captain I booked for the 10th said he’d sell my fish and maybe I can go out with him for a week.
DON’T BRING YOUR LIBERLISM TO SARASOTA!!! GO TO BOCA!!
Actually, FL is a number of states, culturally speaking.
Jacksonville, most of the interior and the Panhandle are still southern, culturally.
The SW coast is pretty conservative.
The I-4 corridor (Orlando and Tampa Bay areas) is more like southern CA than anything else.
Miami to Palm Beach is pretty much a cross between Havana and NYC.
Odd place to live.
I have always felt that the best solution was to take the land mass north of I-64 and east of I-81, tow it out to sea, and set it adrift.
“I have always felt that the best solution was to take the land mass north of I-64 and east of I-81, tow it out to sea, and set it adrift.”
I will defer to your obviously better understanding of the “local geography!” As a Californian, I have always wished we could tow everything south of the Tehachapi, mountains out to sea as well. Los Angeles (AKA Mexico City North with it’s enclave of queers and movie personalities known as Hollywood) has controlled this state since the SCOTUS brought in “one man one vote.” San Francisco, can be controlled because it doesn’t have that many people and at least it’s a pretty place, unlike LA.
One thing I learned after spending six years in NJ, and then returning home...
...is that we in NC inherit the losers from the Northeast. The people who make a success out of New Jersey and New York are pretty nice, for the most part.
The losers are forced to leave and bring their rot with them.
It only stands to reason that when people emigrate in numbers, they woul take their culture and mind sets with them.

Shenandoah oceanfront sounds good to me.
Grab some more acreage while the price is right... :-)
Yes, it’s sh!thole. And hot and humid with gigantic bugs year-round. You don’t want to come here. Go ahead and stay in Noo Yawk, where all the smart people live.
Wink wink, nudge nudge...
These people should not be allowed to leave the hells they have created. At minimum, their voting "rights" should be suspended.
Crap. Go back North.
The NewyoRicans have ruined Central Florida.
Next on Cuomo’s agenda: New Yorkers will have to apply for an exit visa to leave the state.
I live in NYS and am planning my exit as we speak.
or, perhaps they are fleeing to America fromNeo Europa
As do the illegals.
Yes of course, but that’s not the subject of thread, is it?
They wouldn’t TRY that but once with me. I shove a cart right back into their stomachs and tell them where to put it. I’m not usually aggressive, but I’d do it.
People screwing up their own environments and bringing all their baggage with them.
Does that not also apply to the illegals?
