SAN FRANCISCO --The most expensive public works project in California history just got a little more so.
At least 32 massive seismic stabilizing bolts on San Franciscos newly redesigned eastern span of the Bay Bridge failed during a stress test earlier this month, imperiling the structures Labor Day weekend grand opening.
Of the spans 96 bolts, which range in length from 9 to 17 feet, 32 snapped when stress meant to simulate the lateral motion of a large earthquake was introduced, the Sacramento Bee reported

It sounds like one of the DemocRATS’ “stimulation” projects might have been over-stimulated.
No excuse for this tyoe of disaster. Somebody should lose their license....more likely a few should lose their license. Not a one man design job.
Throw a pork chop on the bridge and say, “Hey Mooch!!!! Poke chop!”
I heard Rosie was involved but that could just be a rumor.
I was wondering the same thing.

Obviously the stress test standards are much too rigid. We need to have the contractors involved investigate themselves and report back to the blue ribbon committee on bridge construction.
Be assured, this won’t ever happen again.
Made in China ...
That means more years and more money into that project. It hasn’t been managed very well but typical for CA. And Jerry Brown wants to go ahead with the train that nobody wants to ride on, mandating that at least 10% of the labor be performed by unemployed homeless people.
There ya go!! Have to wonder what type of tensile or other testing were done on the components. Even local Steelworkers’ unions ought to have a field day with this one.
Guessing the contractors tried to save some money and got some high-quality Asian steel for a lower price.
ChiCom steel as far as I know these pathetic SanFran commies wanting to eff American steel. Not to worry they will blow billions on high speed rail to ferry non-existent riders to non-existent jobs. YOUR EBT CARD WILL GET CHOO ON FOR FREE!
You can't be serious. The reason they are homeless in the first place is because they are useless in the job market.
Oh by the way, billions extra on the Bay Bridge span were spent to add a bike lane to nowhere. From Oakland to Yerba Buena Island.
I think the problem was with the bolts, not the design. Whoever supplied the bolts(more like massive cylinders of steel) should be held accountable.
They’re going to spend money training them.
Nope, these bolts are all American-made. Still Communist (aka: union) work, though.
They refused to use Rearden steel.
California’s $68B rail project will hire the ‘disadvantaged’ Like Felons and Dropouts
Read the article. The bolts were made in the U.S..
Per the WSJ these were fabricated in Painesville, Ohio (near my old stomping ground of Cleveland) and the problem was hydrogen embrittlement due to faulty galvanizing.
Ping to post 25
thanks! and acknowledgement
For those who slept thru metallurgy class....
I’ll have to verify, but from what I’d originally heard, they snapped merely from the load of being torqued to spec and setting for a while.
This is something you want to find out BEFORE you pour a few hundred yards of concrete around it...
That these wouldn’t have been tested before use, like a 10% sampling, is beyond belief...
Oh that was in the design from day one.
“American steelworker unions have disparaged the Bay Bridge contract by accusing the state of California of sending good jobs overseas and settling for what they deride as poor-quality Chinese steel. Industry groups in the United States and other countries have raised questions about the safety and quality of Chinese workmanship on such projects.”
And just how do you remove a 17 foot bolt out of it’s hole to replace it?? Go up - maybe 3 foot; go down maybe four foot.
So let’s just start over! Another “shovel ready” project for stimulus #6!
More here too.
Let’s hope on inauguration day for this bridge Pelosi is crossing it and a massive 9.0 quake hits SF...and let’s hope she is accompaning the Bummer, there to let his teleprompter make a speech.
More jobs will be "created" this way.
Probably that much vaunted Chinese steel.
My brother worked on a big ship project in which the very huge bolts were made from Chinese steel. The big one fused onto the project when they tried to apply it and it had to be totally scrapped and they had to start over from scratch. Private sector though, so they managed to keep on delivery schedule despite the Chinese interference.
