Peres: Gas pumping shouldn’t have begun on Sabbath

President Shimon Peres on Sunday congratulated Yitzhak Tshuva, the controlling shareholder of the Tamar natural gas field which was first put into use Saturday, for pumping the gas into Israel four years after the deposit was first discovered — adding, however, that the pumping should not have begun on the Sabbath.

Peres spoke with Tshuva and praised the “momentous deed” he had done “for the sake of Israel.”

However, at a meeting Sunday with Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, Peres said he was sorry that the pumping had begun on a Saturday, “of all days.”

Well, what do y'all think?

I wish they had waited 24 hours and kept the Shabbat. I know there are many secular Jews in Israel, but it is hard to imagine what harm would have come from waiting one more day. And I imagine that devout Jews see Tamar as a gift from God to Israel, and starting pumping during the Shabbat probably like the utmost of ingratitude. So, any opinions?

Since I imagine that they are going to continue pumping on all future sabbaths, I guess it lessens the issue; but they might have been a bit more sensitive to not begin on a day which a large number of Israelis would still like to observe.

Secular Jews frequently break commandments and tradition, not always deliberately but through thoughtlessness.
