Navy Veteran Shot & Wounded By Police While Testing Shotgun In Backyard
CBS Baltimore ^ | March 29, 2013 | Mike Schuh

Posted on 03/31/2013 6:56:34 PM PDT by Ken H

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A 24-year-old Navy veteran is in intensive care after being shot by city police Thursday night. His family tells WJZ that he was testing out a shotgun after being the victim of a home invasion.

Mike Schuh spoke exclusively to the man’s father.

Police say officers responded to reports of shots fired Thursday night outside a home in the 8700-block of Danville Avenue.

“They went to the rear of the location to investigate. They encountered an individual that was armed with a shotgun. During the course of that encounter, one of our officers discharged, striking the suspect,” said Sgt. Eric Kowalczyk, police spokesman.

Shot above his heart was 24-year-old Navy veteran Nick Romano. The police bullet exited his back. His spleen was removed at the hospital.

Your spleen is above your heart?

Not last time I checked.

“Your spleen is above your heart?”

My thoughts exactly. Either the bullet entered below the heart or the reporter is stupid!

“one of our officers discharged, striking the suspect”

What was he suspected off? Making noise in his own yard? Maybe they should have just suggested that he take it to a range and let it go at that.

The guy on the property neighboring my subdivision shoots every once in a while. My neighbor ( a retired Army Lt Col) and his wife call the cops every single time. Despite them knowing its entirely legal.

Well I think the reporter is just playing cop. Shoot first. Ask questions later.

He, or somebody else, was suspected of firing a gun in a residential district ~ and Bawlmore is incredibly densely packed BTW, so the cop came around to his backyard with his pistol already drawn.

Boy had no fire control whatsoever and just cut loose at the first figure he saw.

These East Coast cops really don't get the range time needed to make fine distinctions.

Four shot gun holes and blood spatter can be found in the backyard.

Awful writing. Were the "shotgun holes" in the ground? And the "blood spatter" where did that come from? From when the police shot him or before?

During the course of that encounter, one of our officers discharged, striking the suspect,” said Sgt. Eric Kowalczyk, police spokesman.

What exactly does that mean? "one of our officers discharged"?? Does that mean that he urinated on the ground? NO, he did not discharge, but his gun may have. It probably did not do it on it's own, which is what seems to be implied.

Yup, the police now have an official empty your entire magazine policy. The hospital only lists the most critical wound first. The other 14 wounds have a lower priority.

Now the east coast post office people are another story, they have some fine trigger control.
