Vote planned Wednesday on (CT) sweeping gun-violence bill

The General Assembly's leadership agreed Monday on a bipartisan response to the Sandy Hook school massacre, scheduling a vote Wednesday on a sweeping bipartisan gun-violence bill that imposes new restrictions on the purchase and ownership of firearms and ammunition in Connecticut.

After weeks of negotiations, the deal will create the nation's first gun-offender registry, require universal background checks for all gun purchases and ban the sale of large-capacity ammo magazines like the ones used to kill 26 children and educators at Sandy Hook.

The bill falls short on a key provision sought by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and families of the victims, who wanted a ban on the possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, not just their future sale. In a compromise, magazines now legally owned will have to be registered with the state.

"We're satisfied," said Ron Pinciaro, executive director of a gun-control lobbying group, Connecticut Against Gun Violence. "We think they did the best job they could based on the political realities."

The Malloy administration had no immediate comment.

The Senate is expected to begin debate late Wednesday morning, with final passage by the House of Representatives some time that evening, putting to rest for 2013 an issue that subjected legislators to a massive grass-roots lobbying effort that paralyzed the General Assembly.

...

Leaders said the legislation will expand the state's 20-year-old assault weapon law, applying the ban to an estimated 100 new weapons. It creates a new crime of the illegal possession of ammunition, so that anyone ineligible to possess a firearm cannot possess ammunition.

Only a summary of the package was released, not legislative language. House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk, said the assault-weapon language would focus on function, not cosmetics.

These people are morons. Republicans and democrats alike. How do you register a magazine with no serial numbers? I mean how damn stupid can you be. Not one item takes the guns out of the hands of criminals. The attacks on law abiding citizens freedom continues unabated. It will never end and America will end up a nation of slaves unless America eventually splits into two nations, one for freedom lovers, one for slaves.

Adam Lanza broke 41 laws. It takes a special kind of stupid to believe he would have obeyed a 42nd.

"How do you register a magazine with no serial numbers?"

"You" (i.e. the state) provide a tag with a number. Probably adhesive coated metal foil. Add a penalty for removal of tag. Not rocket science.

No bet, but the Government and citizens in Texas would dearly love to have them here. We would patronize them too.

HOLY SMOKES! Ooopppssss. Wrong Colt. I thought you meant the REAL Colt. I certainly do wish they would sack up, regardless of cost, and move out of the northeast. And stop selling to anit-states. Heck, for a little compensation, I might be up for helping.

The state should be purged from the union. There is no good in the state that overweighs the political evil

You asked how serial-number-less magazines could be registered. I answered the question. Of course criminals won't obey the laws....any idiot knows that. So take your sarcasm and stick it where the sun don't shine.

LOL, you’ve got to be a legislator. You start with the rocket scientist bs and then you whine about sarcasm when I point out the obvious flaws in your rocket science.

Cheers!

I told you simply how unmarked magazines could be marked to be registered. There is no "flaw" in that simple and straightforward comment. I'm well aware of all the so-called "points" you tried to score. You can take your "Cheers!", and put'em in the same place as your sarcasm.

Just to be perfectly clear, registering ANY weaponry is useless, whether it be guns, magazines, bullets or any other hardware. If the druggies can smuggle in tons of marijuana, they can (and do) smuggle in guns and ammo along with it.
