Smith has been sending taxpayer money to his own non-profit New Directions for years and is under investigation for it. The group is run by Smith's former campaign officials and also raised tens of thousands of dollars for Hurricane Katrina relief of which they spent about $1,300 helping victims.
He was also implicated in the Aquaduct Casino bid-rigging scandal.
