Georgia town passes law requiring citizens to own guns and ammo

A Georgia town has passed a law requiring its citizens to own a gun and ammunition — a measure one councilman says is similar to putting a security sign in your front yard to deter criminals.

The ordinance in the town of Nelson, population 1,300, contains no penalties, has exemptions for felons and the mentally ill and allows anyone to opt out. Town leaders said they wanted to make a point about gun rights.

The law requires the head of every household to own a gun and ammo to “provide for the emergency management of the city” and “provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants.”

allows anyone to opt out

More laws should be like that.

I get the point and like the stunt.

I’m picturing an officer in a duty contact with a citizen...

“Sir, can I please see your license, registration, insurance and firearm?”

(Sung to the tune of My Kind Of Town)

Now this could only happen to a guy like me
And only happen in a town like this
So may I say to each of you most gratef’lly
As I throw each one of you a box of brass

This is my kind of town, NELSON is
My kind of town, NELSON is
My kind of people, too
People who smile at you

And each time I roam, NELSON is
Calling me home, NELSON is
Why I just grin like a clown
It’s my kind of town

[brief instrumental]

My kind of town, NELSON is
My kind of town, NELSON is
My kind of razzmatazz
And it has all that jazz

And each time I leave, NELSON is
Tuggin’ my sleeve, NELSON is
The Second Amendment, NELSON is
The Shooting Range, NELSON is
One town that won’t let you down
It’s my kind of town

We are on the path to being Swiss.
Every Swiss household MUST own an assault rifle. They do it for naught, I think, as the Swiss would be the first to run and hide in their hills mountains.

Ah, Julie Andrews: THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC....
:o)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Where do they buy their ammo?

I do not like it.

If they have the power to tell you that must own a gun, then they also have the power to tell you that you must not own a gun.

The constitution establishes the right to bear arms, not that we must bear arms.

I do not serve my government, my government serves me.

If they have the power to tell you that must own a gun, then they also have the power to tell you that you must not own a gun.

Which is exactly what the words 'opt out' mean.

If they were 'forcing' anything on anyone, there would be no options.

Why do I need the option to opt out from something that the government does not have the right to mandate?

If I want a gun, then I’ll have a gun. If I do not want a gun, then I will not have a gun.

The right to bear arms is mine, not theirs.

Like in the Miranda rights...”if you cannot afford one, it will be provided for you”.

If I want a gun, then I’ll have a gun. If I do not want a gun, then I will not have a gun.

And if you choose not to have a gun, you have the option of being shot dead by someone who does. Seems a rather fatalistic way of being proven 'right', in my opinion.

----

The right to bear arms is mine, not theirs.

There is not only a Right to bear arms, but a DUTY to do so.

The Right to keep and bear arms is yours, but the Duty to do so is owed to the State because the State is not legally obligated to protect you.

-------

Your contention was the State was 'forcing' you to do something, I showed they were not since you could opt out.

Now you toss out some logilistic babble trying to prove you are your own authority when no one has ever questioned that fact.

The 'fact' is, you may/may not have a firearm and you may/may not use it in a situation where it may/may not be required to protect yourself, your family or your property.

The 'option' is yours.

So, they wasted taxpayer money passing a law that means nothing at all, since the option was always mine anyway?

What was the point?

I’ll tell you what the point was.

The point was to exercise power that they do not have, but since they were so generous to give me the option to not have to obey them, should be fine right?

Well, what if the next group does not give me that option?

What if the next group is of a different mind and tell me that I must not own a firearm and that I am not allowed to opt out?

What then, ma’am?

There is not a duty to bear arms.

There is a right to bear arms.

I have chosen to bear arms, thank you very much. I’ve a number of them.

However, if I ever chose not to bear arms, for whatever reason, then that is my choice and my right. It is not your choice, and it is not the choice of my government which is my servant and not my ruler.

So they, and you, can BUTT OUT!

It is none of your business or anyone else’s what I choose to do, or choose not to do.

I do not need your or their approval or disapproval for a damn thing.

Isn’t this, in principle, like OCare, forcing citizens to buy something?

It’s also a difficult mandate, forcing people to buy ammo when it’s hard to find and expensive.

I don’t think the Swiss would be that willing to roll over and expose their belly. It’s not like they are French.
