State Sen. Malcolm Smith and city Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested this morning on charges they were plotting to rig this year’s mayoral election through fraud and bribes.

The pols allegedly formed an alliance built on cash payments and fraud to get Smith — one of the state’s top Democrats — placed on the GOP mayoral ballot, sources said.

FBI agents arrested them both at their Queens homes shortly after 6 a.m.

[snip] Prosecutors are planning to lay out the whole sordid scheme during a news conference later today.

Here is a story about the mayor of New Rochelle conspiring to cause the rundown of the historic Armory building currently maintained by the veterans association.

According to the veterans association, they submitted proposals to convert the Armory into a Veterans Performing Arts Center, but the mayor has his own plans to demolish the building and give the contracts to his family members and cronies. The veterans argue that the mayor has refused to repair holes in the ceiling, allowing the building to unnecessarily weather, he has allowed the theft of artifacts from the museum, and he has used bureaucratic tricks to move votes to unorthodox dates when the veteran sponsors are known to be on family vacations and unable to attend.

There's *got* to be some reason Smith and Halloran are victims of racism here. /s

We don’t know that yet. He may “change the rules” once again so he can be KING of NY.

We had a similar thing happen in Florida - two (very leftist) Dems who knew they had no chance of getting elected as Dems in this heavily GOP area got the GOP to accept them as “converts” and sponsor them on the the ballot as Republicans. Needless to say, their positions remained asbolutely the same as they had been when they were Democrats, and they also continued the various corrupt schemes in which they had been involved as Democrats (influence peddling and bribery, mostly for developers). They both ended up on trial and IIRC at least one, if not both, got jail time. Oh...and they completely disgraced the GOP in this county and destroyed the GOP majority.

Republican party chairs have got to STOP accepting Dems into the party as candidates. Anybody with half a brain can see that the Dems in question are doing it simply to make an end-run around people in their own party, either other, more powerful candidates or their own party chairs, and I can’t imagine what could possibly convince GOP party officials to accept people like this.

This has simply never ended well.
