Sen. Graham helps import Jamaicans for work at elite country club

The 2012 PGA golf championship showcased the green links, yellow sands and blue skies at the beachside Kiawah country club in South Carolina.

But it also exposed the political maneuvering that annually brings about 170 low-wage black workers from Jamaica into South Carolina for temporary jobs that could otherwise have gone to local South Carolina workers.

Those low-wage workers helped the club’s financial returns, and indirectly, also helped South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has long pushed for an immigration rewrite that would import more low-wage foreign workers.

In February, Graham told a Rotary Club lunch in Easley, S.C., that he helped get H-2B guest-worker visas for the country club’s 2012 season.

“Graham said the Kiawah Golf Club advertised for 600-700 service positions in advance of hosting the PGA,” said a report by the South Carolina website Easley.Patch.com.

“They got 9 [American] applicants for these jobs,” Graham said. “Three of them failed the drug test. They ran out of visas … I had to go to beg the Department of Labor to give them a waiver so they could get people from Jamaica to come in here and service the PGA.”

In exchange for easing the import of foreign workers Graham received greater support from the business community, including political donations from Kiawah’s manager and owner.

Graham’s support for guest workers also earned him a warm welcome at the Kiawah club, where he’s expected to hold a fundraiser in October.

In 1998 Bill Clinton was actually doing workplace enforcement UNTIL the Georgia Republican Congressional Delegation...Isackson, Chambliss, NEWT Gingrich, wrote him a demand letter, insisting that workplace enforcement be stopped because it was annoying their big Vidalia Onion contributors!

It is ALWAYS follow the $$$! $$$ is power. The two things most politicians care anything about. _______

And this, "“They got 9 [American] applicants for these jobs,” Graham said."

That is pure fiction!

I can see needing to import cane cutters for Florida, or tomato pickers in the DelMarVa Peninsula, but import workers for grass cutting, grounds keeping, and kitchen work in a country club, nah!! These are mostly year round jobs, and job training for locals should be provided to keep down unemployment, welfare and food stamp costs.

The locals who could do this work are much too busy collecting government benefit checks. Filling out applications for government benefits is time consuming work.

That area is desperate for jobs. Many people would clean a toilet for money.

I call BS on the 9 applicants as well.

If the available jobs are cutting cane in FL, that’s where our unemployed should be and what they should be doing.

One of these days, in the not too distant future, ALL those benies are going to run out.

POS faggot. When I was 13, in 1963, I’d caddy 18 holes on both Saturday & Sunday, and bus tables in the evenings at the Rolling Green CC in NW Suburbs of Chicago. Taking those (and other) jobs away from American kids willing to do that work, pisses-me-off to no end!

Primary the bastard SOB!

I knew this! I posted years ago that Miss Lindsey was all about providing cheap labor for the golf courses.

Aww gee come on get a life...You mean that Chucky Schumer, Kerry (when he was one), Boxer, or Dixson or Reid don’t help out their country clubs ? What good is it to have a US Senator as a member of your country club if he can’t help out once in a while ?

A lot of our unemployed would not be physically capable of doing cane cutting work. The Hispanic day laborers are tough little guys. We have dropped phys ed is schools, and wonder why our kids are fat as well as their parents. In inner cities, parents often keep their kids in doors so they don’t get into trouble or get shot. I remember as a child running all over the neighborhood, jumping hedges, climbing trees, and generally staying fit, not to mention that we had phys ed 3 days a week with uniforms and showers in high school.

sorry gleeaikin. Went off on a tangent looking for some information earlier. Found what I suspected. Was thinking would find what suspected ... anywho ... I too remember those times of staying fit and uniforms and showers. Also remember sometimes there was not enough time for showers and then the teachers (in following classes) would complain to the PE teacher and PE teacher was told not asked ... Leave Enough Time For Showers.

The military can toughen up those little pudgies. The real answer is that the employers ought to raise the salaries until they attract American workers and/or put more technological investment in their processes or we cut the sugar subsidies and they do something else with the land.
