Most individual health insurance isn't good enough for Obamacare (Get ready for the sticker shock)
cnn money ^ | 4/3/2013 | Tami Luhby

If you buy your own health insurance now, you'll be in for a big change when you sign up for coverage in 2014.

Just over half of the individual plans currently on the market do not meet the standards to be sold next year, when many key provisions of President Obama's Affordable Care Act kick in, according to a University of Chicago study. That's because the law sets new minimums for the basic coverage every individual health care plan must provide.

"They will offer a lot more financial protection," Jon Gabel, the report's lead author, said of the individual plans that will be available next year. His team drew its conclusions from 2010 data supplied by health insurers.

Some 15 million Americans, or about 6% of non-elderly adults, currently buy coverage on the individual market.

Starting this fall, they'll be able to shop for and enroll in health insurance through state-based exchanges, with coverage taking effect in January. By 2016, some 24 million people will get insurance through the exchanges, while another 12 million will continue to get individual coverage outside of them, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

Both groups will be affected by the new Obamacare rules. Starting next year, nearly all individual plans -- both in and out of the exchanges -- will be required to cover an array of "essential" services, including medication, maternity and mental health care. Many plans don't currently offer those benefits.

Unbelievably, I saw a report about the assclown’s terrible health law in the normally subservient Miami Florida media....amazing.

I think some of the local media is beginning to kick back. The lies are just too hard to take...even for the media hacks. Still...at the national level, most of the MSM is still on Barry’s team.

This brings up one of the creepyest aspects of this thing, for me: They are not just saying you have insurance. They are micromanaging the quality of said insurance you have to have.

I heard, years ago, that depending on your income level, the best insurance was between $5,000 and $10,000 deductible. Insurance is supposed to protect you from CATASTROPHIC hits to your finances. It is why LLoyd’s of London came into existence, for crying out loud.

Obamacare is forcing something on us that, in a very real way, has always been a rather irresponsible expenditure of your funds. It went south when companies stared offering it as an employment benefit. And they did that because the government enacted a wage freeze and this was the way companies got around that to entice good employees.

i.e. this whole mess was caused by the government and now they are using it to micromanage our lives. It is pathetic and insulting.

Insurance is protection against uncertain future events. When you take uncertain out of the equation it simply becomes redistribution.

Obamacare is not health care, it is not free, it is slavery.

Preaching to the choir here...I know.

Now we are getting to the meat and potatoes, so to speak.

The argument for universal insurance is backed by irresponsibility, at its core. Afterall, how can you be expected to save some money and maintain a bank account to meet your personal needs when you have rims to buy, a need for a big screen LCD in every room of your house, and iphones to buy?!?!? When you have needs, you should have planned well enough to meet those needs. If you want to have a baby, you should have planned well enough to have the money set aside to not only pay for the birth, but also the support of the child - it's that simple.

Confusing "rights" with excuse after excuse that tries to brush aside personal responsibility and accountability is absurd.

So people who can't afford insurance in the first place will be forced to the "bronze" plans, which have lower premiums, but they'll have to pay higher out-of-pocket costs...up to 40% (whatever that means).

How will today's mentality of "healthcare grows on trees," and should be free to anyone out for a stroll, align with paying for these out-of-pocket costs? The sheep are going to be so surprised--they accepted a dinner invitation to the wolf's house, not realizing they were the main course.

Many plans don’t currently offer those benefits.”

And what about those of us who choose not to have or pay for such a wide array of services through our insurance? I not only don’t want them but I don’t want to pay for them for other people.

All I want is to be able to keep my present policy which I’ve had for several years. High deductible, primarily in case I have to go in the hospital. Already been told it will no longer be available. What happened to real options and freedom of choice?

We have always had catstrophic coverage with the highest decdctible possible for just that reason. But Ocare forces you to purchase a policy covering all sorts of things you don't need, and that are very expensive. For example, we now have to carry "early preventative in-patient care for drug and alcohol abuse", though we neither drink, nor smoke (one of the most expensive coverages around); full pregnancy coverage, though the Mr. has had a vasectomy years ago, and I am past the age; a 3 million lifetime coverage limit, where we had $1 mill.

These are very expensive, and have pushed our cost from a reasonable $600/month to $1500/mon, which is ridiculous.

Plus, I have read that your coverage will be fully taxable, and any benefits you do receive will be counted as income.

It's almost like it was planned to force everyone into single payer.../sarc

Obamacare does not meet it’s own standards.

This whole Obamacare mess is meant to destroy private insurance.

Note, down in the bowels of the article, that “subsidies” are mentioned. I presume these are subsidies picked off the Subsidy Bushes that grow in the Federal Forest. Other taxonomies of this wonderful forest are “Grant Trees,” “Foreign Aid Thickets,” “Stimulus Bogs” (similar to cranberry bogs, though not exactly like), and “EBT Hedges.”

The plants that grow in the Federal Forest are marvelous. While their fruits have the individual names above, they are know collectively as “Funds,” or “Revenue,” and, in their immature state, as “Taxes.” Federal Workers harvest these fruits, and send them through an amazing distribution channel so that they can arrive, just at the peak of perfection, to the “Account” or, temporary storage area, of “Needy Americans,” “Temporary Americans,” and a host of “Never-To-Be Americans.”

But, that is the wonder of the Federal Forest...it is for all to enjoy the fruits thereof.

If there is a drawback, it is a small one. It is only that the Federal Forest is watered by the sweat of those who are still called “Working Americans.” One other niggling item (can I still use that word, niggling?); Because of the thick canopy in the Federal Forest the only fertilizer that works well is called “Hard Work.” It is generated, too, by those “Working Americans” who contribute their sweat for irrigation. Too much “Hard Work” contributed by any “Working American” can bring on “Early Release From Taxpayer Status” (that’s a term used by those “Federal Workers” to denote the status a “Working American” who dies young). Unfortunately, those “ERFTS Working Americans” can no longer contribute their “Fair Share,” another word for quota, of “Sweat” and “Hard Work,” but, there is a plan to give them a last opportunity to do so: the “Inheritance Tax” is expected to play a larger part in keeping the Federal Forest healthy and productive.

Of course it’s meant to destroy private insurance but I don’t have the least bit of sympathy for them since they crawled into bed with the devil himself.

When my wife and I shop at Costco or WalMart, we often look at what people are purchasing and what they look like and say, “Yep. Figures.”

If you are over 70 and have a problem, they will put you on an ice flow and let you go. You won't get any help to live. So says the "Death Panel" that no one admits is there.

The expensive treatments you think you will get are gone now. All the money is spent in your last days so they will just make sure it's your last days.

You summed up this 50-year-long slow train wreck in one post.

Yet how many American's know this? None, because all the media reports are anecdotes and horse races.

Dreams and wishful thinking are all the same. Expecting responsibility from the irresponsible, ignorant and ideologues is irresponsible.

“Of course it’s meant to destroy private insurance...”

No - it is meant to kill private healthcare, but a necessary step along the way.

It really is true that though the truth will set you free, first it will make you sick.

I almost feel like the bad guy in the first Matrix movie that wants to go back to the ignorant bliss of the Matrix.

Almost...
