“They were hoodwinked. We won’t be.”

On a macro level, don’t be too sure. Most of our society is filled with brain dead morons that are fine so long as they can watch their “brackets.” Combine that with a large contingency of folks that are actively promoting tyranny, to include the official leadership of both major political parties AND the “free” media.

I’d wager about 20% of our society are aligned with you and me. That is a mighty large task ahead of us. I pray that once again we receive the divine guidance and intervention that led us to 1791.

The French routinely gave up more of it’s citizens for the camps and the slave labor details then the Germans would ask for.

Remember, Hitler was elected in a free election.

Not entirely true, Hitler was appointed Chancellor, by Von Papen to get back at his rival Von Schleicher, and they thought by bringing Hitler into the government, he could be controlled. Even after being appointed Chancellor, the Nazis failed to gain a majority in the Reichstag. So Hitler behind the scenes orchestrated a coup, using the Reichstag Fire as the basis for the Enabling Act, which ultimately gave him absolute power.

“Why do the Bloods hate the Crips?”

They both want the same customers to buy their drugs. ;-) Or more aptly, they both want to occupy the same space. Or, to be even more frank, they are animals that have no value for human life....

...wait, I think you just led me to the answer.

Thanks for the clarification, some of that I had forgotten. However, my point really was regarding the short time that led from him being put in power to his death. What seems like an eternity in history, was really a very short period of time. Much more can be done in quicker fashion today.

Shameful. Not trying to minimize their terrible crime, but every nation had people like that and still does. In the future, the good and bad in every nation will all be exposed and deposed or elevated for what they are.

Fun Fact: Who Helped The S.S. Hunt down Anne Frank? Dutch Collaborators Another Fun Fact: Which nation had a higher than normal Collaborators with the Nazi's? The Freaking Dutch!!! What a contemptible people!

Not nearly as contemptible as your bigoted post, which slanders an entire nation of people based on the actions of some individuals of that nation (and I'm not even Dutch). How is your slander of the Dutch people on the basis of some Nazi collaborators in Holland any different from anti-Semites who slander all Jews because of the large number of Jews in early Communist movements, or any bigot who blames an entire nation or race for the despicable actions of some of its members?

For the longest time I tried very hard to figure out why Hitler hated the USSR with such a strong hatred and why the USSR joined the allies. I just could not wrap my mind around why tyrannies would be at war with each other instead of joining forces to defeat liberty.

Because there is more to a political ideology than whether it is libertarian or authoritarian. For example, you can have two authoritarian governments, one of which requires everyone to be an atheist (Communism), another that requires everyone to belong to a state-sponsored religion (Islamism). Even though both are authoritarian or totalitarian, obviously, an atheist dictatorship isn't going to get along with a religious fundamentalist dictatorship in the long run.

Along the same lines, in spite of the fact that Stalin's USSR and Hitler's Germany used many of the same methods, their goals were opposite. National Socialism was nationalistic and rooted in social Darwinism, Communism (at least in theory) was anti-nationalistic and egalitarian. Communism was driven by class warfare - all private property was confiscated or abolished in the USSR. The Nazis, at least in theory, allowed powerful industrialists, bankers, and the aristocracy to maintain their property and wealth, and in fact saw differences in wealth and property as part of the natural order that they wanted to maintain.

So as far as the Nazis and Communists were concerned, the fact that they both had totalitarian systems of government was incidental, what mattered was that they tried to implement opposite worldviews with totalitarianism.

“Hmm. I guess there some sensitive ones out there.”

Really? You consider me sensitive because I see history as a predictor of what can happen again? You consider it sensitive that I am aware of the MANY parallels to 1930’s Germany and 2010’s America?

We are living in very dangerous times and it is NOT “sensitive” to be aware of the dangers and to try to make others aware! That said, I understand it is a futile effort, but I am obligated to make every effort in that futility.

Great feedback, thank you for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. I appreciate it and even though I had realized the different approaches, I had not really compared their ideology to those levels. With your prompting, I have a better understanding and approach to my thinking about the subject.

You are right, evil is not something to be generalized into one single box. It has many faces and sometimes those faces are in direct competition for our destruction.

I look at it this way - a totalitarian state was just the tool that Communists and Nazis used, it wasn't an end in itself. Neither Hitler or Lenin won supporters with the rallying cry "Sign up to have your personal liberties taken away!" As far as they and their followers were concerned, the loss of liberty was incidental, a small price to pay to achieve certain ideological ends.

Hitler promised his followers a racially pure society that preserved class and social rank, Lenin and Stalin promised their followers an egalitarian, classless society. The fact that they both needed a totalitarian state, mass terror, and prison camps to achieve these aims was secondary, at least to them and their supporters.

So why would anyone expect a murderous dictator preaching class warfare, economic equality (in theory) and internationalism (at least in theory) to get along with a murderous dictator preaching the exact opposite?
